What's the deal with "onthelot"?

I thought somewhere in there it said you could submit trailers as well?

It did, it said you can either submit a short movie, or cut up a movie that you have already completed into a "trailer" and enter it.

Its really not about it being a movie or what not, its about what people think is 'cool' or 'good' that gets the vote.

Either way, I AM tuning in for this reality-show thingy. I never watch them, but this one's obvious DVR material.

And even if there's more competition next season, that means a better all-around viewing experience.

Yeah, I've gotten countless phone calls over the past couple days from friends asking if I've seen the commercial spots for OTL (as I'm sure most of you have from friends who know what you aspire to do). They keep talking about how bad all the entries are & that I'd have a chance, but I also remind them that American Idol also shows all the horrible auditions, but there are some DARN talented folk that enter, which you don't see until you actually watch the show.

So I seriously believe that there are some REALLY good entries for OTL ... they just aren't letting on to it by showing them publicly, as it may discourage even more from entering.

The one thing I DON'T understand, however, is why they keep extending the deadline (originally was beginning of September - this has got to be at LEAST the 4th extension that I'm aware of).

They extended it once, as far as I knew. The original deadline was the end of last year. They probably extended it because of a lack of entries, like a lot of writing contests do.

The only thing that has, thus far, kept me from entering is the fact that assuming I were to make it on the show (and why wouldn't I make that assumption if I actually entered?) then I have to deal with the fact that for the 16 weeks of filming I would be unable to work my regular day job. That would mean I would miss 4 months of pay and unfortunately my car payment, rent and credit card payments don't have a "leave of absence" option.

Well, wait just a minute. After you've been on the show, even if you lose, you might be eligible to be a contestant on The Real World, Road Rules, ON THE LOT Challenge. Not only will you be wisked away to sunny Cancun, Mexico for 10 weeks, but you'll also have a chance to win the $150,000 dollar jack pot after subjecting yourself to humiliating competition in front of a drooling audience of highschoolers and drunk college kids. Not too mention the chance to score with mad hot chicks.

Honestly though, I'm skeptical too. I think any serious filmmaker would and should be, but I also think that you take what breaks you can in this business, and if you got accepted I think it'd be pretty hard to say no. As for myself, I'm not applying simply b/c it just doesn't work for my life situation right now (once again, this is assuming I'd get accepted). I, too, do not like the idea of becoming a "reality TV celebrity" one bit at all. But, I look at the people who have been on Project Runway (an entirely different 'creative' industry, I know) and they've been very successful from being on the show, winners and non-winners alike. I think it all depends on how you look at it. What's going on with the former Project Greenlight fellas?

I'm definately going to watch though.

I don't think I could apply anyway since I'm about to be employed by a Fox show anyway. I think that was one of the rules or something.

For anyone who does apply, good for you and best of luck. Truly. I'm going to have nothing but respect for the people who get on there and do well (except for the jerks and you know there will be some). I'd love to see a DVX-User on there.

I've not followed it too closely, Kholi, but it when I was first made aware of it the website had a deadline of September 1st, I believe, because I was sweating about getting a cut from SPARROW in there (the middle section that's available for viewing on the site).

Then when I was pushing that deadline, I looked again & it had been pushed to December 1st. When it got close to that date, I looked again and it was February 1st. Now, as of yesterday it's February 16th.

And that's only counting the 4 times I've looked at the site to check the deadline, so who knows how many times it could have been bumped inbetween.

For myself, I'd rather enter and have the option of turning down an offer (IF such offer/acceptance was ever made) than to not enter at all & always wonder 'what if'. And as DVX-Ben pointed out, just getting to be one of the original 16 says a lot in itself, and does give you a HUGE platform to be visible from.

Though hearing this thing is going to be more like THE APPRENTICE than American Idol gets me less excited about it, for the very reasons someone else stated earlier in this thread.

Seems everyone is thinking way too much about the whole thing. Lets say 16 unique people took place in this thread, each one saying 'well i`m sure i can get in so i won`t do it because of X reason". The chances of all 16 of you getting in are about the same as winning powerball. Everyone loves their own work, but your going for what the general audience will want to see and accept. Most people who look at submissions will discount most they see as crap just because they don`t know the person who made it. There are alot of mediocre entries and a few that I thought were done very well. I`m submitting something just for fun, no intent to get IN, but just to get exposure. Just because you don`t get on the show doesn`t mean producers, execs, hollywood, indy filmmakers aren`t seeing your work too. The site is very popular and draws alot of hits and attention, so the least you make out with is alot of exposure you wouldn`t have had before, and a bruised ego that you didn`t make the 16 selected out of thousands. Even losers on these shows end up set for life as well because they get offers from all over once they`ve been ;released' from the show. Not much to lose by trying in my eyes.

All getting in takes is for the producers to think you'll be contriversal or dramatic beyond the filmmaking process. I honestly think it MIGHT be more fun to just hang around here and talk about the show from week to week :) BUT, knowing someone in the show (Norm!) would be even cooler as I don't really want to get on personally...

LOL, I know man. It's all in fun. Seriously though, I 'm going to enter my boxing film for this.

I hope you (and others from DVXUser) get on then, it'll be a lot more fun to watch!

Good luck, and have fun! :cheesy:

I've worked behind the scenes on reality shows, and because of the things I've seen and heard I could never, ever be on one, because I don't trust the people behind the camera and in the editing room. There's an unbelievable amount of manipulation and deception going on. All they want is drama, they don't care about you or your goals.

Lol, thanks Brandon ... not that I think I'd have a snowball's chance, but I plan on at least entering WHERE SILENCE FALLS, which I believe will be my best film yet, so why not ...

Eastside's nailed it for me ... above & beyond the possibility of having it be part APPRENTICE, where you may not have as much control as you would with an AMERICAN IDOL setting, I'm scared as all get out about how they can manipulate the raw footage in the editing room.

IF, and I mean Powerball sized chance of IF, I ever made a show like that, I'd be scared to say much of anything for fear of how it could be edited ... so instead I'd probably always just be edited to look like I'm staring people down, the dark one with a past to hide, etc., lol.

Since the show is about ratings (as they all ultimately are), I'm not sure if they'll be looking for all 16 to have talent, so much as they will be looking for clashing personailities, etc. So knowing that I'm not going to be some freak show talking about how I'll rule or change the world with my arthouse films, etc. ... I don't think I'll make it. :)

Norm... you're an actor, right? Just act on the submission video like you want to change the world with your art! hehe.

Dude, you have just as good a chance as anyone, and I'd say even better than most! From what I've seen of WSF... you have a great chance!

I'm entering and, although everyone makes good points for not doing it, I'm going to remain oblivious to all that crap :)

Wow, if you make it - I'm watching it. Good Luck. I really like your work.
