Sorry this deal is only for NEC employees. Is this a good deal? ALso i read some reviews where they were saying that this is a truely professionally calliberated unit.

I was thinking about buying this. Its a display only but it does come with extra's like speakers (USD130) and stand (USD99)

Need to decide fast as its first come first server while supplies last.

The spec sheets says it accepts 1080p inputs, though its rez isnt 1080p, thats still a nice feature. I see it listed for 2500 bucks for some reason everywhere though it doesnt justify that price alone with the 1080p input capabilities.

Either way, an "HD Plasma" (which in my opinion, this is NOT, Plasma uses differently shaped pixels so the resolution of this is just like any other similarly priced [after your discount] plasma on the market) is 1024 x 768.

The regular consumer price of a similarly equipped plasma is around 1099.99 , though they dont accept 1080p inputs, but i dont see how important that is when the resolution isnt up to spec with even standard 1280 x 720p. In any case, the 100 dollar savings , IMO is not worth the ability to shop around that is taken away from you buy this deal.

IXNAY from me.

ya i was sort of bummed by the fact that it dosent support 1080p even though there are very few models that do (i think sony's latest bravia supports true HD 1080p). I did read a review that its caliberatted a lot more better then the normal consumer models of samsung etc.

About your price point comparison, are you sure the models you looked at were 42" and not smaller? the cheapest 42" i saw was around 1299 for pana.

Thanks for the input though,

-Kris

Where did you search?

Usually the best prices are on the weekends at big box retailers. I found one at frys for 999. another at Sears for 1099 when shopping for my mother and her boyfriend.

Personally i dont recommend plasma, but its up to everyones personal preference.

here is some more sepcs on the model:

PX-42XR4A plasma display http://www.necvisualsystems.com/app...Details/appl_productDetail.cfm?Product_id=442
FCC Class-B Certified (intended for residential use)description: 42-inch plasma display
XGA native resolution
HDCP-capable (accepts high bandwidth digital content that is encrypted when transmitted over the HDMI interface

  • 42" diagonal
  • 1024x768 XGA Resolution
  • Direct source select
  • HD panel resolution
  • Enhanced picture in picture
  • 60,000 hours half life
is that good enough resolution for all the content being created now a days?

Still a bit confused. I am not so much worried about the price but want to make sure that i put my money for a product that will be good for the next few years.

It depends on what you personally prefer. There are other factors in determing whats good enough for you. You shouldnt compromise your extended and future viewing pleasure based on saving a few bucks. While this is a good deal, is plasma and 42" and lower end resolution what you really want?

Is this for your home living room? Prodcution workstation as in monitoring footage?

Of all the 1024 x 768 plasmas ive looked at , i noticed one inhereint quality or inquality if thats a word, and thats after all the calibration, i couldnt see any good black drop off detail. While the blacks are nice, they dont drop off very nicely. Maybe im dumb, but with my level of knowledge of this stuff, im not sure im that dumb.

Post what you maybe are looking for from an HDTV experience and maybe we can go from there.

I personally would prefer a 1080p display , no matter the size, to be able to have a tv that can actualize every line of resolution. If form factor is not a concern either, projection based HDTV's are always the best choice.

what i really want is this:

http://www.sonystyle.com/is-bin/INTERSHOP.enfinity/eCS/Store/en/-/USD/SY_DisplayProductInformation-Start?ProductSKU=KDL46XBR2&CP=sony_12_18_shop_KDL46XBR2_red_bezel&ref=http%3A//www.sony.com/index.php

but unfortunally i can't afford it at this moment.

but yes you are right a low res plasma is not really what i want but thought the price was quite cheap.

I will shop around more and see if i can get something better in terms of res. I will certainly look at the projection HDTV's.

thanks again,

Anytime, its my pleasure to be able to discuss this with anyone who will listen :)

As far as projection, youll have three options, LCD Projection, DLP and LCoS (HD-ILA [JVC] and SXRD [SONY])

That bravia is really nice, they are amazing sets, but yes, they are far out of my price range as well. My price range was/is between 1700-1900 before tax.

Hey btw, I used to live in San Fran. where abouts do you live in SF?

I used to wrok and live in Rincon centre on embarcadero and Howard near the ferry tower. I am not sure if you have seen the Levi's add on TV where they show a guy and a girl near a F train. The add ends with a caption "Levi's San Francisco", that used to be the view from my window with bay bridge as a backdrop. I loved it. Lived there for about 2 years from 2003-2005. Moved last year to of all the places NJ!! Not too happy with NJ but atleast its closer to NY which is good.

will give you a howller if I come to SF.

Cheers Mate,

-K

Hehe, Nice!

Im not in San Francisco though. Wish i had that view. I dont have a view of anything but an elementary school baseball field. Im in South San Francisco, next to San Bruno. Most usually confused with living in the southern area of San Francisco.

Dont get me started on the junk of a place SSF is.

Why the move to NJ?
