iphone who is getting it? Over or under priced? What would you change?

I don't mean this rhetorically - how many people actually carry spare batteries for cell phones or laptops or things like that? Don't they just charge them every night?

I fail to see how the lack of an interchangeable battery is a big deal. I keep thinking of the iPod itself, which works just fine with it's battery built right in.

I have a pretty crappy phone about a year old....Yes the battery is removable but I wouldn't dream of buying a second battery and carrying that around with me. Do people actually do this?

Or am I overlooking something here and missing the point?

I've got a Treo 650 (which I charge nightly) and like any smartphone you can suck some serious juice web surfing and listening to MP3's--so yeah I carry a spare battery. If my iPod dies, no biggie, I can't listen to music. But a phone is kind of critical--at least for me. Your low end phone probably doesn't have much in the way of functions other than calling that use up power, so it wouldn't surprise me that you don't need a spare. The iPhone with it's big screen and multiple functions, gives you lots of reasons to use it outside of calling.

I think the iphone should come with 2 chargers one for work one for home + an adapter that lets you plug one upto your cigerette lighter. Thats just me. Or make the battery user swapable then they can make a extra 5% from people buy spare or replacement batteries. APPLE LISTEN! People want to give you money for extra batteries. Take our money please.

I don't see why anyone would be excited by this. While I get the coolness factor of having an Mp3 player built into your phone, why would you want Apple's DRM-ridden, intentionally-crippled iPod technology built in?

I don't see this as anything other than Apple's attempt to hook people even deeper into the evils of purchasing songs from iTunes...

Now an MP3 (and of course OGG Vorbis) enabled phone that didn't use DRM and doesn't require special software to load up -- that I'd be interested in.

Cingular service sucks, it has just about the worst record for dropped calls. There must be a reason why they couldn't make a deal with Verizon. Remember that to switch to cingular, you're gonna have to pay the penalty as well.
I listened to Leo LaPorte, "The Tech Guy" yesterday here in L.A. He says he won't buy one until he gets to test one. Too many variables and i'm a mac guy with a treo.

I just heard more bad news again today about this phone. You can't run anything on it that isn't native. No outside programs, no skype, nothing that isn't specifically made by mac for it. So my Treo is still looking real good.

I'll probably wait until a few more iPhone models come out, maybe by fall we'll see something that can run outside programs and skype.

You would think that developers would start working on products/programs for the iPhone. Someone will come out with a way to have custom programs.

They can't. It is a closed system. This is much like it used to be when you could not buy a mobile phone, you had to rent it from the provider. You should be able to read about this later this week on this site or get the podcast. Without a doubt this guy knows his stuff about just about anything that has to do with computers or electronics, it is what he does for a living. http://leo.am/radio/l He is singularly not impressed with the phone. And if people are going to try and write programs for it, why wouldn't verizon or t mobile want to do the same thing? I think it says something when the number one mobile phone service in the country isn't invited to the party.

In an interview I saw, Jobs said that there will be third party programs/add-ons, but that those developers would be working alongside Apple to make sure that their programs don't "break" the phone (etc.). Whatever that means exactly.

this is what I read...makes sense, why release such a cool product with extended functionality and let some 3rd party developer bypass or skip certain things to make their software work without more time investment, etc. I mean, anyone on here wouldn't want to pay $600 for a phone and buy some 3rd party app that causes annoyances, etc.

I just remembered that I had a few things to say about the iPhone, and Apple in general.

iPhone: I'll hold out on the phone (even though it's rediculously cool) until they get video chat on there. It'll happen eventually.

Apple: Now that they've introduced multi-touch, I can't wait for their first tablet computer. I will be getting one of those first chance I can.

You really cannot see why people would be excited? Have you checked the price of a treo 700p? To get this phone for around the same price is exciting. Again Apple is targeting people who bought $500 phone before this phone came out. If you have a free phone that came with your contract and your on the cheapest plan then I would guess this phone isn't for you. Apple won't drm music that you already own. Buy the CD and rip it to itunes, then copy to your phone. I have never bought a song from itunes.

I have a ppc 6700 and it is slow to death and the battery life sucks. Far from perfect and it was a $500 phone. I also owned a treo 650 2 weeks ago and it was better but the os seems very primitive. iphone is a phone and I would love to have one and would trade my phone in a heart beat for it. (Assuming it works like I expect):badputer:

I am still not into paying an arm and a leg for a phone. That might just be me. Though, I will concede two points:

1. I just went to the APPLE website and saw the iPHONE demo and it looked WAY cool. Also, I just spent $250.00 bucks yesterday for a 30gig video iPOD (it comes in the mail FRIDAY. Very excited here.) I do admit that the 1 inch bigger screen real estate would have been nice. I trust that since the video iPOD only has a 2.5 inch screen that I will nearly never use it. But, its still a cool feature.

I am still a little squeamish about having a phone that can do so much...but I am not nearly as anti iPHONE as I once was...

i like SPRINT as my carrier

I have Cingular, and there's nothing wrong with Cingular.

It is the most popular carrier in the US with 65 million customers.
That's why Apple went with them.

Plus, isn't Verizon better than Sprint?

It depends on what you mean by better?

For me better means, excellent calling plans and customer service. Where I live (upstate NY) Verizon and Sprint work equally as well. But Cingular is hit or miss here. Its pretty rural. If you go north to Albany or South to New York City, I am sure every big carrier is going to deliver. In the bigger cities, every mom and pop cell phone carrier will probably deliver for that matter.

All I know is from personal experience. Sprint has excellent customer service. They have never left me on hold for countless minutes. They have always notified me of a better deal and allowed me to rewrite my plan(even while I have been currently tangled up in a contract) and their tech offices have been way cool on more than one occasion tending to my phone without charging me the deductible fees.

Also, there was a couple months of horrible coverage where I live. I called on more than one occasion. Finally, they asked me to give them one more shot to fix the problem. If they couldn't, they would let me walk away from the 1+ years left on my contract, no questions asked. To me, that is excellent customer service. And starting with the next day, my phone returned to full bars.

Add to that, for me, they have the best plans. They allow my anytime minutes to start at 7pm (they are also doing 6pm now) but in this area, Verizon STILL doesn't allow anytime minutes to begin until 9pm. Now, I am not selling SPRINT here. I am just explaining why its impossible to make the distinction between one cell phone carrier to be better than another.

At this stage, the top 3 are going to have their share of towers in the big city. So, if you live in a big city, you can go with ANY carrier and be happy. But, if you live in a more rural area, you have to choose wisely.

I am a Sprint customer and the service is only as good as the phone. Plus cingular has role over minutes right? Some phones get great service with clear reception and some sound like speakerphone. My ppc-6700 sucks, but the keyboard slides out at that is way coooool.

Hey Nik...Btw, I used to live in Newbury Park when I first moved to Cali back in '93...on Kathleen drive. Ever hear of it? Ahh, that brings back memories...

What I wanted to ask you is what is the brand of your phone? At first, I went with a Samsung phone because it was a beautiful little phone but its reception sucked. Then, not one, but several SPRINT techies said that Sanyo is bar far the best performer for the SPRINT service. I have had a couple of phones since...both Sanyo and they weren't lying. Its a MUCH better reception and all around much better performing phone....
