I very curious what people would rate both of these movies

Garden State and Little Miss Sunshine

1 through 10 (overall)

1 being the worst. 10 being the best

thanks

i was luke warm on both of them. but i have my own rating system. i felt garden state was 'bucket' while little miss sunshine 'pailed' in comparison...... imo, of course.

GS was alright; funa and cute but not fullfilling like a Sideways was for me ....

I'd rate it a 6 whereas Sideways is a 10

Have not seen LMS

Garden State - 9

I thoroughly enjoyed this film. The theme of love really got me. Natalie Portman is gorgeous even when she's plain looking. Zach Braff did a great job on this film. The reason I don't give it a 10 is because, well a 10 is really something extraordinary. I reserve 10's for films like Pan's Labyrinth.

Little Miss Sunshine - 6

I would rank this lower, but 5 seems like a dirty little middle number. This film deserves more than that I think. I chuckled a few times. The characters were two dimensional and robotic. No person is as clean cut and well defined as these characters were. Unless the film was based on a comic book, or video game, the characters should not be this cardboard. Don't try to sell me horse crap and tell me it's brownies. If you start out selling me horse crap and I know it's horse crap, that's fine. I can use horse crap for certain things like my garden. The honking horn was just too much for me. It was lame after the second stab.

LMS gets a 3. It started off good but it died right on the spot when (SPOILER AHEAD, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD DON'T READ ON ....)

SPOILER>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Arkin died.

It got lame real fast after that with all the silly Chevy Chase Vacation ripoff nonsense. (I love Vacation BTW.)

Next time you see the word "SPOILER" control yourself and don't read on. Sorry, though. Not very good movie anyway.

this site could stand to implement
spoiler tags
like on other film discussion forums.

Its not like I was reading on and couldnt control myself....

Your spoiler warning and spoiled info was on the SAME line

:kali:

Most people read one word at a time. What are you, a photographic reader? Damn brainy speed readers. I put this ahead of it for crying out loud:

SPOILER>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

That should be a clue to stop reading.:kali:

I tuned out of Little Miss Suckshine the second they introduced a character who didn't talk. Independent movies with characters that don't talk are too much for me. It's like, "we get it, you're independent. You can stop adding all of the independent cliches".

Noct, a little confused about this line: "The characters were two dimensional and robotic. No person is as clean cut and well defined as these characters were."

Didn't you just contradict yourself? If they're well-defined, they're usually not two-dimensional.

Anyway, I was kind of shocked at the blatant ripoff of Vacation. I mean, had those directors seen that movie?

Oh, and I only laughed at one part, which was when the cop stopped them and Greg Kinnear had to get out of the dead body in the back. Which was ironic, since that was the only time my date *didn't* laugh (note: it didn't work out). I always like to see what movies do with that scene because it's so cliche (the cop stopping the person who has something to hide) and I like to see how they get out of it. Usually they'll screw the audience over and the cop will get a murder call over the APB. But this movie set that moment up well.

That was the only thing I liked about LMS.

Oh, and Garden State was the most beautifully shot movie in the last ten years.

I personaly liked both movies, but in all fairnes I think I've seen 1 chevy chase vacation
movie, so i guess i didn't make the connection.

I give GS a 9
and LMS a 8

(I know what you thinking "Im one of those guys who loves tons of movies, but Im not)

GS - 8 (I really connected, even though some elements seemed amateur)
LMS - 7 (I thought it was interesting the way they wrote themselves into and out of situations. And I thought the daughter was adorable in a way that was both tragic and optimistic at the same time. Great casting.)

"Yeah, well, sometimes nothin' can be a real cool hand."

Great point. I agree.

By well defined I mean perfectly cutout and in a perfect apple, no bruises, no imperfections, an ideal apple. If I were to describe an apple like that to you it would more than likely not be true. I would probably be exaggerating, much like LMS was in their characters. They were defined well, but not realistically.

I could say C.G. Eads is a person who only likes to eat watermelon. CG Eads only plays with Lincoln logs. He has no other interests other than that. See how I am defining who you are and reducing you down? Even though those all might be true, it's silly an no one person is well defined. Even if I listed 2000 true things about you, which would be a very well defined description. Maybe for a robot that was absolute. We as humans are capable of so much more. A good director will know this and let certain chaos escape. LMS did not.
