The Black Dahlia:

Okay John, since this doesn't contain Sly, Cage or Costner, I think I'll give it a go...

No, really, I had heard nothing but less than positive reviews but based on what you're saying, I'll give it a shot.

I cant wait to hear your thoughts

I have to say again; I do sense something is missing but the overall negative press and failure at the box office is a mystery. But the more I try and figure it out, the more I realize

It's a ****ing Noir

I found it too be a very serious dramatic attempt and it has Brian at the top of his game. In fact, there isn't a single missing element on the film table

"The plot sucked"

It's a noir

i just had to say.
The first 4 minutes of Dracula is friggin amazing. (the rest another story)
And "empire of the sun" is one of my favorite Spielberg movies.

I would not put De Palma in the same category as Spielberg but he is definately on god-status. He is a true auteur.

I'd like to subscribe on that one but no filmmkaer has even batted 1000.

John Carpenter is still a god even if he has lost the touch simply for Halloween, Escape From New York and The Thing (Christine is still my favorite). More a demi-god.

John, what did you think of Josh Friedman's script? His blog is hilarious, but very little has been posted since just before the films release.

I have been wanting to see this film since it came out and for one reason or another it has always been pushed to the back burner.

Hi Jpeck

The more I think about The BD, the more I like it.

The Screenplay was great; the dialogue had wit.

Ill check out his Blog

This appears to be on DVD now(?) so will have to check it out. Since there is a bit of interest in this right now, thought I would link to a fellow DVXuser member and EVS sales team member Ramzi Abed. He is premiering his move Black Dahlia Movie Jan 16th and part of the Lost Weekend leading up to it. Good chance for those in the LA area. (and now back to De Palma).

I thought it was one of the most beautiful movies ive ever seen. but i did NOT like the ending. it was like. "hey this movie is 3 hours long... lets just cut the last hour off, and Blame it on the mom."

Mesmerizing talent

I just watched the film. I must say, I was frustrated with the scoring of the film, it felt out of place at times.

////////////////////SPOILERS\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\

TimurCivan, I am not kidding when I say this, but thank you for spoiling the ending. If I hadn't know about that, I would have probably been upset with the way things turned out. REMINDER: post spoiler alerts!

Mia Kirshner was mesmerizing, even with her short screen time.

I tend to find Hartnett and Johansson annoying actors, however I have no problem watching Scarlett even in her worst performances (the MUTE button is a wonderful thing) but this time, I didn't even sigh at their lack of talent.

The film had a good noir feel to it, which suits Hartnett and Johansson, however it wasn't completely "old school", it still had modern cinematic style to it. This may be the reason it got so many negative reviews.

Not great, but no where near as bad as the 5.6/10 it has on IMDB.

I was about to plug him too :) I got to see all the raw footage as they were shooting it for a year or so. Point of note, directly related to the forum, is that Ramzi's entire movie was shot on the DVX100!

I agree..The Black Dahlia was one of the worst movies ive seen in a long time. The sad thing is, the trailer was SO good! I dragged my friends to see it opening night because I was really interested to see the movies take on the unsolved murder of Elizabeth Short. I hated how incredibly decieving the trailer was...it barely dealt with the case, just the stupid detectives love affairs. I was so so so disappointed.
