SD progressive-scan camera for £1000?

Hi there,

I'm looking to buy an SD DV camera for £1000 or less and I'd love some advice. It's important that the camera can do "true" 25/p and "true" 16:9. Is my only option a 2nd hand DVX100? Am I right in thinking that neither the Sony PD170 nor the Sony PDX10P do progressive scan?

(The camera will mostly be used for producing content for the web, hence the importance of progressive-scan capture).

Many thanks,
Jack

The PD170 does progressive scan at 12.5 fps, not 25p.

You might find a JVC GR-PD1, it'll do 25p in standard-def, and they were blowing 'em out at like $600. But frankly nothing will compare to finding an original DVX100E; you might be able to find it for a thousand pounds.

Oooh, exciting... I've just stubled across a thread on DVinfo which suggests that the Sony PDX10 can spit out progressive-scan video if you record to a computer over firewire. This is exciting news because I'm planning to do the majority of my recording on a laptop running DVRack.

Thanks,
Jack

Hi Jack, just be aware that the PDX10 has three 1/4" CCDs, and does not use the entire CCD for capturing video, since it is one of those cameras that also captures still images. The entire CCD is only used for stills, and a small area is used for video. So the video quality is nowhere near even a Sony PD150, let alone a DVX...

Ah, that's interesting, thanks. I'm pretty certain that the DVX is the camera for me... I'm going to start looking at the 2nd hand markets now.

Thanks a lot,
Jack
