renting out equipment from home

Hello peepols,

I've noticed a few people here who rent out their equipment(HVX, M2 ect...) without having an official company to deal with paper work(proper insurance). How would you go about renting out equipment without the risk of them running off with all your gear, leaving you with no way of buying it back/insuring gear? Is there a way to write up a contract or something or other? One way I've heard of doing it is having the person who's renting the equipment leave a blank check with you then when you get the equipment back, anything that needs to be compensated for can be written on that check in dollars. Although their check can always bounce leaving you with nothing. What materials of theirs should be copied and filed(drivers license, work numbers ect...). Any ideas, methods, anything? I think this would be a great thread for people who looking to rent out their equipment but are reluctant to do so due to the obvious risks. Everyone could learn from this thread. Thanks.

make them leave their car keys with you. and a credit card w/ at least $4,000 limit on it.

Then you can sell the car, and buy a new HVX

Ultimately everything rests upon your ability to recover damages, if your equipment comes back busted/doesn't come back. Unless the renter has left you cash sufficient to cover whatever damage happens to your equipment, this could mean going to court, which is going to cost you more money, on top of the lost/damaged equipment. A contract is all fine and well, but in the end a contract is only as good as your willingness and ability to enforce it.

You could do that. I've rented HVX200's from a few private owners around town (the rates are better). i've never been asked for a credit card or to leave a deposit, just ID and cash up front for the rental period. Now, when I'm on a production, I have an insurance policy and can issue a certificate to whoever i'm renting from proving coverage for damages. you could insist they are insured, but you'll rent less frequently, i suspect.

but really, the only way to do it without risk is to be insured. whether that's you or them. you could have them sign a contract making them responsible for damages and take down a credit card number, i guess.

robert, what kind of package do you have? i might be interested in renting it sometime.

Insurance is def. going to cost me. But if I had to rent from insured customers only then I guess I have to.

Well, so far I have an Arriflex 16S wih a new crystal sync motor. Three lenses including 12-120 T2.5 zoom, a 18.5mm T2.5 and a super speed lens 25mm T1.1. I also have a britek ligthing kit 1,500 watts, and 2 2k fresnels from B and M lighting with a tall boy and a slightly smaller stand. A sekonic L-758DR light meter. Redrock M2 35mm adapter with support rods, follow focus and everything else that comes with the holiday special plus carrying case and shim kit. It supports Pentax k lenses. A 85-205 zoom with macro feature and two fast primes both 25mm and 50mm pentax lenses also two other canon lenses. A changing tent. A production monitor JVC 15". Oh yeah, two S8 cameras, one with adjustable aperture and built in light meter and the other without. Plenty of diffusion and some black wrap. Reflectors and other stuff. And other grip stuff. I plan to keep building upon what I have now, way more. I have pretty low rates. My living room is losing so much space( I don't have a bedroom) but I love it!
