CinePorter™ FAQ

Okay, air conditioning is ON ! :-)
But, my questions were not specifically for David, I read that some guys here were more than aware, they could have answered, as they animate very well this thread.

Being concerned by SSD by Summer 07, and learning final specifications schedule make sense for someone buying it unconditionally, isn't it?

Jenny means no harm. Her intentions are good, and she is just very ambitious, with big ideas. Some things are just getting lost in translation.

Jenny,
While I have not followed to closely the discussion of ssd on this particular thread, I think the best answer for you, is: While spinning platters may not be the the most "fool proof", forward option, they are the best option for most applications of this kind right now. SSD will definitely have a place in the future market with similar applications. Just not now.

It is too far into the development process for the cp for that type of change to be made. Regular spinning HDD's (with their flaws, and eventual obolesence) are the best option right now. For us and the developers. They are cheap. They are compatible. They have been around forever. SSD is just too expensive right now, and would (so is my guess) increase the final cost of the cp considerably. Both from the cost of the ssd and the additional r&d dollars. As well as the increased time before the product is releaseable.

I think the focus of Spec-Comm, and this thread right now is just fine tuning, and making sure some "great" feature that would improve the functionality of the cp has not been missed.

You have big ideas, and I applaud you for it Jenny. However, right now, I think that folks want to keep this thread more about answering questions and fine tuning the product. Not performing a major overhaul on a product that is nearing it's final stages. There have been a major overhaul or two on it already.

SSD is not a viable option. YET. spinning HDD's are the best option for right now. The cineporter will have HDD's. You'll have to lay that idea to rest on this thread, for now.

Later,
Jason

I heard with the new removable hard drive setup, the cineporter can double as a toaster when the harddrives not inserted.
But will it work with Strawberry Pop Tarts? It's useless and I won't buy it if it doesn't.

Hi David
will the cineporter work with the new Panasonic AJ-HPX2000?
-C

There is no reason why it shouldn't, however we will need to do all the testing before we certify that it does.

David

I was reading, in another Forum, that if you put Schnozberrie Poptarts in you could rupture the space time Wanka continuum.

If this happens will the Schnozberries still taste like Schnozberries?

Hello Dave,

The CP-3s looking great. Just to clarify; eSata will not be supported with the initial release?

Would be great if it could be as I think the vast majority of users are currently using it or at least will be by summer. I'm guessing my workflow half the time will be editing right from the CP3.

Ian

I'm amazed that people want to edit off of the CP. Am I in the minority here? It just seems like you'd be needlessly tying up your equipment when you could just as easily offload it to a bigger hard drive or RAID setup.

I agree. While the Cineporter would offer enough room to edit off of it without difficulty, I'd much rather dump the contents to my PC. Especially since I'd be converting the files to Raylight AVIs before editing.

Also, I'd be afraid of editing directly on the Cineporter, just in case something went wrong... As it is, I offload my P2 cards to my desktop, and then copy that directory to my server. I edit from the desktop, and then delete the files there when I'm done. The originals stay on my server. That way, if something goes terribly wrong during editing, I know I have a copy safe on the server.

I can't imagine the horror of editing directly from the Cineporter, and then accidentally knocking it off the desk and causing a head crash... Not too likely to occur, but the mere thought is enough...

You are correct the CinePorter will not initially have eSata.

thanks

Hi,

I'm back, (after a short vacation on reduser.net) thanks to SurJones, kwoff and Jennyparis for answering my last post.

So the Cineporter is still in development... hmmmmmmm

I've been using a FS-100, I don't like it because I don't like using an external recording device. I thought the Cineporter might be better, I like the idea of attaching it below the camera. I just saw the picture on the website, that thing is huge. Personnally, I already think the HVX is pretty big, I prefer shooting with a Z1 for handheld stuff. The camera I would buy today is the new V1. Anyhow, for the HVX, I'm waiting for bigger cheaper P2 cards, I more than ever think those are the way to go. And what we need along with that is widely availabale cheap mass storage for backup (ie HD-DVD or Blueray).

I agree, the CP should have a SATA connection, that is the present of storage for some (like me) and the future for many I'm sure. Anyhow, since the disks are removable, wether they be SATA or ATA (IDE) you can use a product like Newertech's USB adaptor, info here : http://www.newertech.com/products/products_univ_adptr.php

I have one, it works great.

Cheers,
Damien

well, I haven't been keeping up-to-date, just waiting for the release, but I'd have to say that I'm very impressed with the new functions—removeable hard drives now?! (among other things).

As they say in the film industry, "very impressive."

Is there any difference betwen the "160GB non raid single disk" and the "320GB Raid" or is it just that the "320GB" is two 160 disks in raid,
and the singel 160GB you get a empty diskslot (that you can fill later)

What i mean is that if i by a 160g now can i buy another 160 later and plug in or is it just a singel hardisk slot in the single version?

And If i want the 320 then I must use two 160GB disks right, if then i wounder if that will decrease my battery life alot.

I been reading half of this tread and did't find the answers.

cheers Joel

Charlie

Snozberry?!? Who's ever heard of a snozberry?!?

I'm sorry if this question has been asked before, but since you are accessing the data through the P2 slots - does this mean you will be able to record in the 720 24pn mode directly to the cineporter? I know you cannot do this with the firestore unit.

The CinePorter acts as a GIANT P2 card. So to answer your question. YES!!!!! (Isn't that great?)
