I just saw the new pics on the spec-comm website. Please don't take this the wrong way because it's an impressive piece of of hardware.

But, it's huge.

Jim

Around 2'ish pounds. What has been advertised from the beginning. Actually it has gotten a bit smaller and more streamlined, if memory serves.

I could be wrong but it also doesn't look like alloy to me -- it looks like it's plastic. Wasn't the case being redesigned using metal?

The one in the picture is plastic with a poor paint job. It's the first prototype chassis. The shipping unit is alloy with side inserts and the front grille made out of special plastic, just like the camera. We'll keep the pictures updating as things develop. We just wanted you guys to see some real pictures.

Hi Jim,

We've done everything possible to make the unit as small as can be and well balanced. It really doesn't feel that big on the camera and you can mount it elsewhere if you like. :)

You are correct Jason. We are still shooting for 2.5 lbs with Battery. We'll have real numbers for you when the metal prototypes are finished.

David,

could we expect an eSATA instead of FW in the released product? or later?
Did you already try it with a SSD? or plan to do?

Thanks.

Is there some sort of flash-RAM buffer so that you could keep recording while hot-swapping hard disks? That would rock...

Hi Barry,

At this time we have a 512MB DDR Cache, however the single drive unit will not have the capability you ask for.

Now, the dual drive unit will allow you to pull and replace a full drive while recording to the other, like the P2 card system. and with the large cache you don't have to worry about shaking it too much while doing it. :)

Seems to me like you just answered our questions regarding why anyone would buy the RAID1 version -- the ability to record indefinitely by hot-swapping hard drives is one of the best features yet...

As for the size of the unit, I actually thought it would be bigger. I thought I remember seeing some concept pictures way back when that had it about an inch or so thicker...?

Will the drives have to be in the cp to be read, dumped, etc? Is this a definite "yes", or is it still possible that you might be able to include functionality that would allow a user to pull out the hdd and hand it directly over to a client?

Thanks,
Jason

Is it too early yet to ask about Uk pricing and availability?
A conversion of the 160 gig price gives about £1400 inc VAT. I would guess import duty will add a bit to that, but it looks like it may still undercut Firestore.

Regards, Dave

David,

you answered questions that make "sense" for you, or questions asked by "friends and famous", but you just simply ignored a bunch of questions.
Could you be fair to, at least, answer that... you don't want to answer?

Thank you.

Hi Jason. As long as you use the single drive unit or the spanning function, you can pull the drive out and hand it to anyone you want. You can copy a drive in the dual drive unit as well. You only need to keep the drives in the CinePorter™ to offload if you are using the RAID function. We are working on a way to "break" the RAID 1 function once you have finished recording to be able to hand one of the drives off to your client. When you use RAID, you can stop and replace BOTH drives and resume recording. You can then insert BOTH drives back into the CinePorter™ to offload. There is an offload docking station that would contain the RAID chips in the works.

I'll give you one more thing we are working on, but may or may not implement. We have the ability to format the drives with Fat 32, NTFS or MAC FS. We are looking at possibly giving you the choice of File Systems to format at startup. There are some advantages and disadvantages to this.

Hi Dave,

We are slowly going through the possible dealer list and making initial choices. We want to chose dealers that would be able to take care of the customers and ones we can train to do some repairs on site. There have been hundreds of dealer requests worldwide and the choices are difficult. (I guess I'll just have to visit them all :))

I know the price in USD that we will sell the units to dealers, but what that will translate to in the specific country, I don't know. We will likely sell the ones from the Group Buy direct or maybe, if the dealers are setup in a particular country, work it through them. That's part of the reason we put a limit on the Group Buy.

Anyway, I'm sorry I don't have a ready answer for you Dave.

Jenny,

With all due respect, I have either already answered the questions you asked in the past or your questions don't make sense. I also do not like to take adversarial positions as you have taken on this board. You may say anything you like, I won't delete your opinions, but I won't waste my time arguing either.

David

Adversarial positions? About what?

Am on the CinePorter buying list (#95), waiting to place my order, and asking you if I could plug just one SSD (In this case, I don't need RAID), to eventually change my order to a non RAID, if your answer is positive, and you find this abnormal?
This question is normal because I read well everything related to CinePorter before DARING asking a question, and I found one of yours answers stating that you optimize the HDD provided with CinePorter.
So, as SSD are 150% faster and with no moving parts, and you responded that you were studying SSD, do you yet need to "optimize" SSD?

After, you explained that the connector panel could be changed for an eSATA, is it unfair to be curious about this ? Summer 07 being quite soon.

I agree there is some argumentation in my posts, but this is just playing the open attitude with some humour.

Does I have to offer you public apologies?

Jenny, man you really need to chill out a little. David, and everyone are extremely busy over at SpecComm, not only running their business, but also with this development. We are luckly they and NEED to appreciate that they get on here and talk at all with their schedule. Not to mention that President of the company. If he has missed, or doesnt have an adequite answer then it is okay that he get it them later after he re-reads, (which he typically does to make sure he did not miss anything) or becasue he might have an answer that he could not (do to the "Closed Information Act" and needed to speak to a spesific department to get more info.

thanks
