Favorite movie of all time?

Is there really any other movie to be stuck with forever? These lists are so subjective, but I mean, really.

RENAULT

Rick, there are many exit visas sold in this café, but we know
that you've never sold one. That is the reason we permit you
to remain open.

RICK

Oh? I thought it was because I let you win at roulette.

RENAULT

That is another reason.

Favorite

Greatest

Best

Such a tough choice. Favorite for me does not neccsarily mean The Greatest Film Ever

At one time I would have said JAWS and yet at another time would have said THE RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD, but today I say

COP LAND

I came to Casablanca for the waters.

RENAULT
Waters? What waters? We're in the desert.

RICK
I was misinformed.

Hudson...

Casablanca is all of the above simultaneously.

It is my runaway

It is far and away the

...and it is hands down the
Best

They really knew how to write for pictures back then. Just about anything from the studio period is a real treat to watch. I'm a big fan of J. Epstein - what an ear for dialogue.

Top 5 and IMHO The Best Film of All Time

Top 5 and IMHO The Best Film of All Time

The contenders... In Random Order

The Godfather - This is the Heavyweight champ. I think it is an outstanding movie that most movies are measured against.

The Shawshank Redemption - The best journey movie ever. I forgot I was watching the movie and really felt trapped just like the main characters. Perhaps one of the greatest endings of all time.

American History X - This movie overachieves on so many levels. Norton is amazing in this movie.

Heat - Best Cop and Robber movie of all time.

Star Wars - This movie made us believe that we could be taken to a galaxy far far away.

Saving Private Ryan - The best war movie ever made.

Momento - A great movie that really forces you to think.

American Beauty - I love this movie.

Citizen Kane - I think this is the most overrated movie of all time, but yes it did introduce many of the techniques. It would make my top 100 but certainly not number 1.

Pulp Fiction - I hated to leave off Resovoir Dogs, but this movie is the best of Tarantino.

Schindler's List - Great drama and the editing in this was just outstanding.

Unforgiven - One of the best westerns ever made.

And the winner is.................

THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION

Did you just put Citizen Kane at number 9 and then say that it would place in your top 100 but not number 1?

Note to self: It's subjective, get over it. Repeat to self ten times...

I won't comment the selection... (that's for sure!) and I love the american cinema but they are all american movies?!! Where's the rest of the world's masterpieces? There is a world outside and out there...

IMHO Shawshank is the Best movie of All Time

IMHO Shawshank is the Best movie of All Time

I have seen a lot of movies and these are the films that stand out in my mind. If I had to choose a film out of the list that I put together as some of the top films, The Shawshank Redemption wins in a close shoot out with The Godfather. This is not to say there are not other great films, or other great non American films. But from what I have seen these are MY top films. Its just subjective really.

I second both overlandfilms and Gordon Prince's comments but it's true it's just subjective really. It depends of a lot of factors: background, experience, age, etc. However, here is a good opportunity to discover some of the gold offer coming from the movie production around the world.

Well, this was listed as "favorite" not "best" or "greatest" so I can't really argue with anyone's picks. Well...I can, but I'm not going to until I see something completely assinine...

My top 3 (for now, anyway):

The Shawshank Redemption - I've loved this since the first time I saw it. This is such a great movie for me, in every way. The score is great too.

Titanic - I really like this movie. Everything about it is so great to me, the "is there anyone out there?" at the end gives me chills each time. It's such a powerful film, and I just love the ethnic/irish influienced stuff james horner does with the score.

Saving Private Ryan - I'm a sucker for war films, and this is just a masterpiece. Really, really enjoyed this one.

This is hard, theres' so many films to choose from. But every time I watch these three, I can't get them out of my head for quite a while...I could watch them so many times over without being bored. :)

OFF TOPIC

For those people who named Fight Club, if you haven't read any of Palahniuk's work, you should get on that right away. I saw the film first and after a couple years I started readin his work. Now I can't watch the movie anymore, instead I will pick up the novel and read it. Soon enough I will have read it more times than I have seen the flick. I use to "love" the movie, I am a huge fan of Fincher (even Alien3) but the film can't even compare to how rewarding Chuck's stories are.

The thing about his work, is that it is so hard to capture the "essence", that few people could ever make them into quality films. Fincher did an amazing job, but I doubt he wants to spend the rest of his career making Palahniuk's work into films.

FUN FACT: Chuck thought when he came up with the splicing the porno clips into movies that he was so original. When he met Fincher, David told him that he use to do that when he was younger.

When I was a projectionist in college, we'd save a few frames from breaking down porno films here and there, and splice them between reels of 'clean' movies that we were showing.

I think that gag has been around for as long as there have been editors, projectionists, and porno movies.
