GETTING IT: First I have to say I am probably not going to get one. Not that I don't want one but $499 is to rich for my blood. With that said I do currently own a ppc-6700 which costs $549 on sprints website and I owned a treo 650 1 week ago, but I bought them used so half price. Horray craigslist!

PRICE: My initial reaction was that it was about $100 overpriced but then I remembered that the treo 700p is $649 at Sprints website. So I actually think that they priced their phone very competitively. The phone is sweet for the price. It is high enough that your kids won't be getting one, but you will be the coolest dad one the block if you have one.

CHANGES: Only one I would make the home button have more functions. I would make it work like the treos 5 way button allowing you to navigate thru the phones interface with just one hand easily. UP,DOWN,LEFT,RIGHT, PRESS DOWN,HOLD DOWN, AND DOUBLE TAP are the functions that the home button should have. That would make this king of phones, the lord of phones. Hold down the home button to return home.

Any one else

GETTING IT: I have a Cingular 8125. I "like" the PPC? I don't LOVE it. It's just not what I expected it to be for me. In lieu of that, the Apple's simple interface and design seem just fine for me. If not outstanding. I know that PK Gillock had a problem with how many clicks it took to call someone. There IS a Keypad on this phone, so you could use it just like a regular phone. Hit the phone icon, dial the number; easy as that. Just as well, i'll bet on iChat being on this phone sooner than later being that it runs OS-X. I talk to more people online than I do on the phone. That's a huge selling point for me. The two-handed design is fine with me, I have no issue with it.

PRICE: Six-hundred + IS a bit steep I'd have to admit. At the same time, I'm expecting (with the chance of rain on my parade) to get discounts and all that jazz from being with Cingular already and knowing people that own and operate Cingular stores. So that's not my issue at all. Eearly adopting won't be either, because you can always sell and upgrade. I'm cool with the price.

CHANGES: I have two qualms with this iPhone. 8gig max? I don't know if that's because of the prices of Flash Disks, because the phone has an internal 8gig. Either way, this is a big deal to me. It isn't exactly a Widescreen iPod when the storage is so small. 20gig at least? But hey... what can ya say. Battery Life: Just a llittle more, please? I said in another thread that I'd be fine with five hours of video and such, not so sure about that now. But I guess it's going to come later. Those are my two changes, otherwise I'm pretty much on-board.

iPhone looks insane. I want one now.

Jobs has his work cut out for him. Cisco is now suing Apple over their registered iPhone trademark (which Apple has been trying to buy / license for almost a year), and they don't have the FCC approvals lined up for the device(s) yet. Funny, Apple's communications person said yesterday that the lawsuit was "silly" after they'd approached and courted Cisco for more than a year to legally get the name.

It doesn't change the fact that it's cool, but it'll be an expensive push for what Apple hopes to be a 10 million user product. It might just be called the iTel when it's all said and done.

I want my AT&T Wireless back. Ever since the SEC anti-trust rulings, I've been a SunCom customer. And I'm not nearly as happy as this guy...

Ill be getting it the first day possible. Me and my brother will dump our sprint plan immediatly and snatch up two of them. No longer have to find a computer to place sports bets :)

Price is no concern. I wanted something like this for so long and was so let down by the UMPC's .

I would not really know what to change until i used it for a while. Thinking of the internal battery, it shoulndt be a problem because since it has the Apple Dock connector, getting emergency battery power is not a problem at all, just pick up an iPod battery charger thingy.

Not getting it till it has more memory and goes to Verizon.

Cingular sucks.

At first I said I wanted one right away, but I think I agree with this. I just recently switched to Verizon from Cingular and am a lot happier, plus I'm not crazy about jumping on the whole 1G bandwagon.

Those waiting for a Verizon switch should read Cynic's link.

Yes, Apple just walked in and noticed you were incompetently selling the same old crap with slight hardware improvements over the last half decade, and decided to kick you out.

That's great.

The problem with Verizon is that it only works in America. GSM (cingular,Tmobile) works all over the world. For people such as myself that travel outside the U.S, GSM is it. I think the phone is cool, and I'll probably get one. I think the price is right as well, it is actually the same price as the first I pod when it was lunched, so it will probably go down as well overtime. Also I have always needed a phone the could read quicktime movies, or at least mpg4 with in an emai for m y workl, so this feature alone is worth the admission price. I just wish that it was more of an open platform, it would be really cool to use skype with it, which I am afraid will not be available...

Yeah. Skype was advantageous to PPC markets; I know a lot of people that recommend and use it on Treo's, etc. Also, that's a current problem with mobile phones: unable to play quicktime and Mp4. As far as open platform for video goes, I would almost expect the Videolan guys (VLCplayer) to put something out sooner than later, a program that will allow the playback of all of those other files and codecs on such a nice-looking screen.

By the way, I believe the GSM/Cingular thing is covered in that article, so you're pretty close to why Cingular was and is a viable choice for service provider. It also talks about the fact that Visual Voicemail and other features boasted by the iPhone will not be available to those outside of the Cingular network IF the phone was available for purchase unlocked and the like.

I really hope its available readily at the Cingular Stores and Apple Stores. Ive had my fill of waiting for the next 5 years after The PS3 and the Wii.

13 hours for the Wii, and got sick of searching so dumped an extra 150 for PS3 on Craigslist.

I didn't say I wanted an unlocked phone. I'm well aware of the disadvantages of going down that path. I just said that I would rather they used Verizon, since it's a much better carrier than Cingular.

Yes, but using a GSM outside the US is incredibly expensive. In actuality, any phone that uses a SIM card works outside the US. Whenever you get to your destination, buy a $5 card from Voda or something, get some airtime, and you're set. And it's WAY cheaper than using a GSM phone. I spent most of 2005 and 2006 overseas, and hardly ever used my GSM phone for making local calls.

at 8 gigs, Im not too thrilled about it. If they release the same thing as a 30/80, even for a hundred more, I would definetely get it. Pretty typical looking to me, nothing innovative (in terms of style). Pretty good concept though.

I guess we've seen the end of the iPod as we know it.

My 2 cents

I have had sprint for over 5 years and I would definetely dump sprint if they paid my disconnect fee. deducted it from my bill every month until it was paid. I got sprint because it had the best phones but that has changed. But I still think using 2 hands to operate the iphone is to much they need to make the home button a multifunction button. 8 gigs is plenty for me considering it is a phone and how much a nano costs.

I too have the Cingular 8125 and I love it. I had the prior model of Smartphone also (Audiovox ?xxxx?). I loved that phone also. I am a huge fan of the Pocket PC and the Smartphone does a decent job of approximating my HP Pocket PC. My only problem with my phone (and the one before it), and it is a huge problem, is the nav button wears out and I have to fight with the button to do anything - even just scroll down to pick a phone number off a list. It has been great, though, for web browsing, and a while back I was on this site daily reading and making posts. I dont remember when the last time was that I used the phone for the web, but that's only becuase I now have my laptop with me everywhere and wifi emits from the foliage here in L.A. Which brongs me to the iPhone.

I'm not an Apple guy. I dont like Apple, I dont like the hardware, and I dont like Apple guys. I love the look of everything Apple - hardware to OS to GUI - but I dont want to have to own an Apple to get it. I think the iPod is beautiful although I dont listen to much music so have never bought one.

While I think $599 for the phone only is a great price. When you take into consideration, though, that the price is with a 2 year contract, it's a no go for me. I'm with Cingular. I really like Cingular. Never a problem. I was with Verizon before that and they sent me running and screaming away from them never to look back and I was with another company before that. I cant even remember who now. I've been with Cingular since they were Cingular. 1999? Never a problem, great coverage, sometimes great phones, othertimes nothing I want.

While I have no desire to switch from Cingular to anyone else, there is no way I will ever sign a two year contract - I must get a new phone every year. For both the new technology, and the fact that I wear the F*&% out of my phones.

The built in WiFi on the iPhone is great. The iPod is great. The 2MP camera is great. The design is great. It's beautiful. I will gladly be first in line to drop $600 on just the phone when it drops. I'm not signing a two year contract, and I'm not spending $1000 on the phone alone. (Not a published price, but a typical price difference between a 2yr vs. phone alone.)

My thoughts.
