One thing that you wish you would've gone to film school for?

Dude. You're in Los Angeles and are having problems ? If you can't make it there .....

Half of users seem to be based out of L.A. With all of these DVXFest's going off every few months why haven't you volunteered your ass on these projects ?

No offense, but it seems you've been planning to do it for about a year now. Don't you own an HVX200 ? Get your ass out there and start making movies and stop making excuses. I aint preaching. I speak for myself as well. I took 2 months off from this place purely just to unplug and refind some fire. It worked.

I'm shooting this week and cannot wait; I'm nervous, excited, stoked.

I know Isaac is really enjoying his venture into film school; shooting on 16mm and he's at the mother of all film schools (Tisch - NYC) so I can imagine the wave of film theory one would be getting there. I would like to have gone purely for those 2 reasons.

But I too have zero degree and it comes down to those who do and those who don't. At one time you have too make a decision to do it. Are you committed ? Are you afraid ? Are you just plain lazy ?

Kholi, it sounds to me like you're either afraid of failure or success. What are you waiting for ?

Make movies, not excuses.

What's the consensus that living in Los Angeles breeds people that are willing to work on the same stuff as you and believe in it without getting paid lots of green? That's false. If I had to name people on this board that have similar interests to myself the two top names would be Sam Balcomb and Jesse Soff. The Ore creators. I'd love to know if there are more people on DVXuser that are interested in creating things like this. I also saw the MIDNIGHT crew doing something similar.

I'll give you one thing, though. You're right, I might be afraid of failure more-so than anything. I have a serious problem with writing over and over and over and over and you-get-it. I just told Barry_Green yesterday that it's where I get stuck. I want to make sure that I write something worth the effort, worth dropping my own savings into. Other people will argue that if I keep in the writing stages, then I'll never know anything. Take the plunge. I'll argue What's the point if it ain't the best -foot-forward from the get-go?

I bought that HVX in hopes that I'd say screw it, take 10k out of my account and go shoot something. Oh and because I bought it extremely cheap, but that's aside the point. It didn't make me stop wanting to put my efforts into the writing stage. That's probably a bad thing, I should just go out and shoot SOMETHING to say that I shot SOMETHING, right?

A soccer mom can get an NLE and cut video of little jimmy at his big game.

And anyways, you don't have to cut film, you can get a high quality master for your online. You don't always have to go back to the neg.

You missed the point again. LoL. I'm not saying I"M BROKE AS HELL. I'm saying that it could get expensive to cut film. That's it. Bottom-line.

I have a job. I'm at work now. =)

I didn't say that it had to do with money. I'm just making the point, whether or not it had anything to do with yours, that shooting with film takes more effort, financialy or whatever. That's it. Bottom-line.

Are you saying that it is not more expensive to shoot and edit film than shooting digitally and editing digitally? Is that the point you were making? So that I understand as I'm very ignorant on the subject of how much it costs to shoot something on film.

If ya can't make it in L.A. ...

The consensus is there. Next up would be New York.

You can spend the rest of your life writing, writing and re-writing but maybe you should make a movie instead.

In fact, I think you should submit an entry to Dramafest. I don't care if it's about a pillow. Tell me a story about something even if it is the confines of your own home. Take a action figure out onto the streets and give us a day in the life of that dude.

Contact Sam and Jesse and offer up your time and energy to work with them.

Contacts.

Go out, bust your ass and represent and when you're ready to shoot something, they'll be there for you. Look at Brandon; dude is on everyone's shoot it seems.

-

So

1. Give me a Dramafest entry (Purely for fun)
2. Contact Sam and/or Jesse
3. Pay attention to the threads here and start getting involved
4. Send me $500.00 for my consultant skillzzzzzz

Biiiaaattccchhh !!!

LOL. I'm not going to pay you 500.00 when I get consultation for free. Wtf John; that's just economically innacurate. Almost as inadequate as I when it comes to actually doing something in this field.

I have contacted Sam and Jesse, trust me. I'm thinking they're already busy with their stuff, which is understandable. They do good work and probably already have enough people.

And about that Dramafest thing: as much as I would like to, I couldn't just go out and "do something" for the sake of. To me, it feels wrong to do something just because. And then to exhibit as your "work", even if it was for fun. That's probably horribly stifling and stodgy, but I can't help that; it's just how I am as a person. And, it goes along with my current line of employment as an illustrator/Graphic Artist. If I exhibit, I try to exhibit my good, great, and best work, never my weird pencil doodles.

I do appreciate the kick in the pants. I'm always a fan of stern motivation so it's never taken the wrong way with me. Just can't outright force myself to do something I don't really believe in.

In effect: I am totally jealous of anyone on the boards that shoots anything. =P

Dude's... I made a film for around 5-6k... paid most of the crew, but had a ton of help from some of the fabulous DVXuser's on here... it can be done, you just have to do it! I was scared, but in the end, I'm happy, and I think I made a fine film :)

Alright alright Kholi

I agree; making **** to make **** is no fun (See my last attempt at last fest) but forget about Dramafest

You tellin me there is no story you can tell today using yourself, your camera and whatever is immediately available ?

(tick tock tick tock)

We can either start making movies or we can talk about it the rest of our lives.

(Man, I am just like the Zen Master)

I am definitely going to jack you when I get to LA, use that 10K on my next project.

I know about showing only your best work, etc, but it's getting old.

HEED THE HUDSON!!!!!

Oh man, that's going to go on a T-shirt:

HEED THE HUD!!!

LOL. You know the sad part? I'd probably be afraid of you so I'd just kinda hand it to you. But seriously, I know. Someone that's become a really close friend keeps telling me that I have to break out of that mind-set and get my hands dirty so that I know what I'm getting into. Otherwise, even the writing will be for not.

I'll get it. Trust me, I will.

On shooting stuff just to shoot stuff.

If motivation is a problem to shoot your next project that you CARE about, (all of us like to be lazy sometimes too ya know) , then when you find that motivation to shoot something you dont care about, you are actually out physically shooting something at that moment, meaning the motivational problem has been solved.

So how does it make any sense to put effort toward anything you dont feel any passion for? You are physically shooting kaka , why not physically shoot your main project you want to do? Am i being hard to follow, i know my thought, but i cant form the sentences.

Basically , imo, it never makes sense to shoot something you dont care about or have passion for, meaning i would never go shoot a movie, just to shoot a movie,

*especially for the fests on here which are really , (again in my opinion, everyone loves my opinion) really not known for their usable criticism. When more attention is shown to someones critique of what is in ALL reality and not sheilded by the dvxuser wall of friendliness , there is a problem.

got off topic a tad, but just felt like saying that and getting it off my chest.

If you have to wait for the motivation to shoot it, then wait for it. Dont be forced into something because you were told to do it.

Uhhhh...Sigh.... Nevermind.

Kholi, as an illustrator/graphic artist, you should already know what it's like to make "shi* to make shi*", that is if you work commercially at all. Hell, doing freelance mograph forces me to do exaclty this all the time, and you know what...I learn a lot from that "shi*" and use that knowledge to do the good stuff and not waste time running into problems when trying to do the best stuff.

Trust me, no matter how much you think you know, how much you've planned, etc, your first attempt at making a film or whatever is going to suck, might as well get the bugs out early and the process will get your mind going to help you develop the big story.

Personally, doing all the design that isn't reel-worthy opens up my eyes and I'm developing more, and faster, than I ever was reading through countless technical threads or books and telling myself I'll do it one day.

SO....come on in, the water is fine...

So Kholi

When can we expect a little film from you ?

Hey now, don't think I've never SHOT anything. I have a really STUPID mini-short that I did to test the HVX with lights and crap. I used my girlfriends good luck figurines to do it.

It was minus tripod and minus a whole-lotta-stuff, but I cut it up and dropped sound in the back. I've also got stuff from way back to high school days done on Still Cameras, when they took those little floppy disks. I cut them in some weird, crappy NLE, but nevertheless it was something.

I just have an issue with showcasing.

To answer your question: Sooner than later? Ha...ha?

"Good work" is totally subjective.

Not really.

Yes it is. No matter what you say, it will always be subjective. I know you're John Hudson and everything, but it's the same principle of taste between music. I can say country music is good to someone who loves rap, which then they might say that country is crap. You follow me. Ultimately, we define works as being good or bad because if no one was there to see them, how could we say whether or not it was good or bad. We tell people whether or not something is good or bad, and for all the people that say something may be good there are about the same amount of people to say it is bad. IT'S TOTALLY SUBJECTIVE
