One thing that you wish you would've gone to film school for?

I didn't go. I didn't exactly realize I wanted to do anything in the entertainment business outside of graphic design or illustration/animation so I didn't exactly prepare for school. Didn't get the chance to go and I think I like working and writing on the side, attempt to do it that way, instead.

I do have one big thing I wish I would've gone for: I've realized how freaking HARD it is to find people that are interested in the same things you are. Share the same kind of views on material, and want to create the same sorts of things. And even when you have those around you (long-standing friends) who like the same things as you... they just CAN'T be motivated. It's like using a twig to move an elephant. I guess if you tickle the elephants ... nevermind. Just take that analogy and run with it.

I wish I would've gone to meet people like me. Kinds-of people who will offer in-depth feedback, are interested in the content and making it better, are genuinely ready to tackle all sorts of things. I just do not have those people around me.

Everyone I know that's similar is like... forty? I mean, how do you ask a Forty-something guy to leave his kids and wife to come and shoot a short with you? He's got responsibilities.

It's hard to build a team that's got the very same intentions as you and will believe in the content you want to create.

I guess that's why I need more money. Rant over.

Now try doing it in Mankato, Minnesota.:)

I wish I would've gone to film school for "film". Learning the different (S)16mm and 35mm cameras. How to operate them and also learning how to deal with higher end lights, anyone can learn britek or lowel but it's a little harder to get your hands on HMI's and what not. I don't care about the degree or whatever, I just want the experience of working with "real" equipment applicable to bigger productions in LA.
I don't think anyone needs film school at all, hell I didn't go and I've had an internship in hollywood and currently have an assistant editor's positon Full Time. It's all about what you know and who you know most of the time. I guess what I am saying is, that I don't care if I paid for lessons on 16mm/35mm cameras or went to school, it's not about "film school" it's about the knowledge and availabiltiy to work with higher end equipment. If I knew people that I could rent this equipment for cheap, then I wouldn't even think about film school, all I would need is some time and plenty of books(most that I already have). Well, that's what I think anyway.

Kholi, surely there are film classes or groups in your area you could join (that' s your name right, Shirley :) ). Have no doubt; going to a respected film school will get you amazing contacts but there are many other ways of meeting passionate, driven people.

Start a meetup group for your area: http://www.meetup.com

Post up on Craigslist or DVXUsers.

If there are no film groups in your area, attend writing or photography groups. You might even find people interested in film among your local stage theatre crew. Go see some plays and start smoozing.

There is no easy way (short of large sums of cash) to coordinate a large group of talent and passionate people. This is a creative field, it takes creativity to pull people together.

Good luck

Yeah that's what I am planning to do. I've been looking into writing classes and such since the start of the year, and I'm going to try craigslist to pull together one or two people I think I could work well with.

I'm going to go meet some friends of a friend that are in the programs in UCLA to see who I pick up. I'm trying to turn over new leaves this new year.

For a long time I had trouble finding people to shoot with me. Now pretty much everyone I shoot with is through this site. Hook up with some LA DVXers. I am coming out next month, hoping to meet up with a bunch of y'all, so if I want to head out there for any period of time, I can get into some peoples' projects. But it seems like the LA crew is pretty active.

I was totally teasing back at ya, Mark. LoL. I'm not sad. Just slightly frustrated. But it'll change.

I'll meet up with you and the rest when you come out this way!

There were quite a few of us (of various disciplines) working with Mark & Ted out here.

Yeah Mark invited me out on set, unfortunately the end and beginning of the year is unusually busy at work. I'll have to be around to shoot advertisements with the company until the end of January. So even though I'm on this site, I'm working at the same time generally.

Sounded like fun, though.

No kidding, I felt like I was the only person on this board not on that picture. But it's good. that's the coolest thing I've gotten out of this site.
