Your Very First Movie

I don't know where my first movie is....but i know i don't wanna post it up. The first real short film i shot was two years ago for a school project where we had to remake scenes of Romeo and Juliet. Naturally, i chose the fight scene between Romeo and Tybalt, and we had a lenghty counter strike/half life 2 sequence where they started pounding RPGs and whatnot at each other. We topped the level for that...but I think its terrible.

Now i'm 17 this year and still putting out movies that i'm ashamed off. I use a DVX now though - used a sony handycam then

My first attempt at making a film ever was for a 48 hour filmmaking competition (LOL Great way to learn that was). Unfortunately I lost the film in a hard-drive crash and I can't be bothered re-editing that garbage. :)

The genre we got given for the competition was "Disney Family movie". We called the film: "The riverside kids and the adventures of the magic bones" and it was about a group of stereotypical disney kids going out on a mission to find these magic bones. The film got screened to an audience of a few hundred - I think the highlight of the film was my 'and ACTION' call with a guy jumping out of the bush for no reason at all. Ouch. At least it got laughs from everyone, haha.

Super 8, 1976 or so.

I probably still have it lying around somewhere, but hell if I'm gonna get it telecined so you all can see it. :)

Ah, to be able to edit again with a razor blade and cement.

Zak, Psychogenic actually sounds like a good idea! I want to see that movie!

Although, I strongly recommend you cast Ben Affleck in the lead.

My first film that never came to fruition was titled (you'll appreciate this GenJerDan), "The Adventures Of Randal and Llama Boy". It was about two childhood best friends, Dave and Randal. Then Dave gets lost in a jungle while on vacation and never found. He's raised by llamas, and when he turns 17 he somehow finds his way back to civilization. He (now only able to communicate in llama grunts and very basic english) finds his old friend Randal, now a nerd, and the two have to team up to find a way into the biggest party of the year. At one point, they go to the zoo so Llama Boy can collect some of his animal friends and accidentally let out all the snakes. It was at this point that people started asking me questions like, "how are you going to get the zoo to let out all the snakes?", that I realized filmmaking was a lot harder than I thought.

LMAO Brandon, worst fight scene ever. Props to you for posting it up. I wouldnt post my first. I loved the PS console on the desk. I loved the potato salad. One thing though, Daniels acting at points was too good for this flick. But totally understand why that guy didnt go down when the long haired blonde dude was punching him repeatedly.

You had some pretty advanced editing there w/ titles and all! What system did you use?

The only editor I had was Camcorder (VHS/VHS-C) to VCR or real time edit. I'll post some of my first and you'll see how PRO your first looks! :)

Good stuff! You had it down at 12 pretty well actuallY!

I made my first short film with my friends when I was ten years old (in 1997). Shot on video8 chronologically because we had no way to edit it. A great way to learn filmmaking if you ask me.

I don't have my first film here right now, but a couple of months ago I edited together some films we made that same summer (in 1997), so it's some of the first stuff I made.

Link.

Brandon - That was fun to watch. There's nothing like a group of friends getting together and making a movie.

But I don't think you were 12 or 13. In the video you looked about 16 and since you used some music from Gladiator, which came out in 2000, that would put you at about age 16 at time of production. :) CSI: Isara solves another mystery.

PK! You are right! I was 16... Daniel was 15... I just remembered that last night, as Daniel and I were talking about it.

HAHA I used a computer editing software called ShowBiz. What's funny is we actually used that up until we were about 17 or 18... then we totally switched to NLE's...

LOL! Yeah, the potato salad! LOL! I'll tell ya, this was fun to make... I even bought the cast/crew lunch... pizza and soda for everyone! A fed crew is a happy crew :)

Good stuff, Brandon. And we all remember Timur's. :)

My brother was into filmmaking before I was. He had one of the first camcorders (back in 1985). It was a VHS that had the deck seperate from the camera, which you carried around on a shoulder strap. We would make a lot of music videos (Phil Collins, Mr. Mister, etc.). My brother was pretty inventive and was probably the first one to come up with the snoricam (where the actor wears the camera). One day we looked outside and saw him running around the backyard with the camera and tripod strapped to himself. Recording himself running around. We thought he was crazy. But, in fact, he was the first indie filmmaker. :)

Here's the first movie my friends and I made. It's a mockumentary about a squirrel documentary that goes horribly wrong when the squirrels start attacking people. It's a full hour.

Wow PK... straight to feature length ;) Downloading.

My first film has been posted here before, but I'll re-post in this cool "First Film" thread for those of you who haven't seen it. I learned a ton by going through this process, though I am very proud of this film.

It has received great reviews from people all over the world and won the contest it was originally created for. It has also been shown on public television in South Carolina.

The film is called INVITATION and is 3 minutes long. Unfortunately, at the time I didn't understand how to properly compress footage (not that I'm an expert now :) )...anyway, so I only have a 78MB WMV of the film. You can download it here:

Hope you enjoy it!!

Peace,
Larry

Not fair! I had to use a Hi-8 Handycam... ya'll who shot your first films on a DVX or DV camera aren't fair! ;)

Larry, I've told you before... I like Invitation a lot!

Mike, downloading your's now.

Thanks Brandon, glad you like it.

Mike... just remember... "The Trout is out There" Cool video, love the commercials!
