Re: FAQ- How to digitize 24pA footage for a 23.98 Edit

In a previous post, NoahK gave an incredible explination of how DVX users who want to edit in a 23.98 timeline must first remove the 2:3:3:2 pulldown introduced by the DVX100 during shooting when they capture the footage. I'm wondering if there is anyway that either he or someone could actually take the time to explain how those of us who are new to the world of 24p can actually go and set these settings when we want to get started in Final Cut Pro. Are they in User Prefs? System Prefs? Any information would be awesome.

Go to Audio Video settings (under your FINAL CUT PRO pulldown menu on top of your desktop.) Once there, click the tab marked Capture Presets. Scroll down the list until you highlight the DV NTSC ADVANCED PULLDOWN selection. You can double click this (or simply hit edit) to see a more detailed screen. On this more detailed screen, you will see an option marked FPS with a pull down menu next to it with various frame rates. As I understand it, this is the one NoahK wants you to leave (or set) at 29.97. Hope this helps.

I recommend selecting the 24p preset from Easy Setups. Setting the individual items can result in an improper sequence if you're not familiar with all the settings.

So, just to clarify Noahk - when we click on "Easy Setup" in FCP, we would select "DV-NTSC 24p (23.98) Advanced Pulldown Removal"... correct? We wouldn't want to simply select "DV-NTSC 24p (23.98). This is assuming we are shooting in 24pA. Is this right?

I would go with the advanced pulldown removal setup- that sets up the sequence and capture settings properly. And remember the easy setups do not affect current sequences in a project, only new ones. After invoking an Easy Setup, you then get the new settings on all New sequences you create from that point.

what if....

what if....

A quick question related to this topic... if you captured the files without removing the pulldown for 24p advanced is there any way to go back and do it once they've already been captured? I've got 80 hours of video and WOW... it would suck to have to re-capture all of it.

Thanks.

Yes- you can apply the remove advanced pulldown command from the tools menu on clips in your browser. Be careful though, this cannot be undone. Then you copy and paste your edit into a new sequence with editing timebase set at 23.98. With this much footage, I would not recommend doing this unless you plan to output to film.
