Comparing HD-DVD with DVD using Panasonic's Hi-Def Projector

I found this today and thought you guys might be interested in seeing it.

Someone is using one of Panasonic's hi-def projectors (720p) to project from both a standard DVD player, as well as an XBox 360's HD-DVD drive. (I could be wrong on this, but I believe that the 360 uses an advanced up-rez algorythm from 720 to 1080, but that might just be for games and may not apply to the HD-DVD player... doesn't matter here though, because it is playing through a projector which only has a resolution of 720).

Anyhow, the primary image shown on these pages was taken with a still-shot camera as it was being projected... the image shown is standard def, hover your cursor to see the same scene shot in hi-def (720p/projector/digital-still camera... etc.) :)

For what it is worth, here is the link: http://www.stesoft.com/hdvsdvd.html

the HD version looked Awesome. especially on the scene where brad is shaving. look a tthe texture in the walls.

Training Day is appearantly the premier looking HD-DVD for anyone who would like to check that out, CNET always uses chapter 3 i beleive for their reviews. Im gunna add it to my netflix to check it out in 1080p on my new toy. :) 56fc97

Too bad this guy that did the reivew Took pictures of his screen with a 100 dollar digital camera, and the results are skewed because of it :-/

heh.. I did the comparison (found this via referrer logs) and actually its a good camera. The results aren't skewed either way because its the same camera taking both pics a few seconds apart (long enough to switch inputs).

Anyways, check out this shot (from the same camera, earlier this year)... it's not a bad camera... it's old but a good quality consumer-level digicam. (Canon G3)

Good shot, but what im saying is a better comparasin would have been a DV capture or somthing.

DV means.. what...? you're talking a single frame capture off a digital camcorder that uses the DV Format? Thats far lower resolution than either the upscaled DVD or the HD-DVD.

If you mean a digital frame capture of the two sources, then how would you upscale the DVD to compare.... photoshop? and what does that show exactly... how each would look if you digitally extracted each frame on your computer, which doesn't have much to do with how a home theater setup would display the two formats.

Sorry for not making myself clear, i would have Used a Capture card in my computer to get the direct feed.

cool. Which capture card takes HDMI and Component input and digitizes full frames at 1080i?

Ok, that actually is pretty cool. If I had an upconverting amp (like the new Denon 2307ci) that upconverts analog component (which is all the xbox360 has) to HDMI then I could use that to grab frames from the HDMI output of the amp for both the Oppo 971h and the HD-DVD. I didn't know something like that was only $250. Probably requires a high end PC though..

Yes, Since it is giving you full 1080i Uncompressed frames, your computer would have to be very beefy to handle it,

ok ok boys, lets not fight.

While we're on the subject of HD DVD's. How do you guys think Blu-Ray will hold up against HD-DVD.

Heres my take on it: I believe in the next 3 years, HD-DVD will put Blu-Ray players out of business simply because the average cosumer knows that HD means High Definition, so theres already a favor for an "HD" product. That, and Sony owns the rights to Blu-Ray, and from what I understand, right now, they are only releasing Sony owned films onto the Blu-Ray format, which will hinder their profit greatly. so... just like BETA Max, Blu-Ray will fail...

just my 2 cents. What do you guys think?

I think that BlueRay already has stronger brand recognition than does HD-DVD.

However, I think both will co-exist for a good while... I think such co-existence will be the result of a player that is able to play both types of disc.

And, Warner Brothers just announced a disc that contains BOTH BlueRay and HD-DVD formats of their movies.

I think there will be ways to accomdate both.

just so long as the image doesnt pixelate every time someone moves..... i dont care which format wins. Digital HD cable is like watching legos

Blu-Ray actually has more studio support than HD-DVD. HD-DVD only has 1 exclusive studio being Universal, while Sony has of course Sony's own movies as well as a couple other exclusive studios and the ones producing for both formats.
