Hostel is a rip off of EuroTrip

I don't know if this has been covered before but I just saw the comedy EuroTrip (2004) and wow, talk about stealing ideas from another movie! It's obvious Eli Roth got his ideas from EuroTrip for his movie Hostel (2006). If you haven't seen EuroTrip, watch it -- its like Hostel but a comedy. Unreal.

.. mmhmm and that movie is a rip off of an american werewolf in london. which is a 80's horror.

PS.... who cares. both movies are lame.

No, EuroTrip is crap but a million times better than Hostel. They are both horrible movies. I really really hate Hostel.

How is EuroTrip a rip off of an american werewolf in london? That makes no sense.

Let it out Pen Cap Chew. If there's one place to do that, it's here. Just let-it-out.

Okay. Um, yeah, Hostel is a really really REALLY bad film. Thanks. I feel better now.

I still don't get all the Hostel haters here... it's not a great film but how is it really really bad? Though I have only seen it once a while ago but my impression was that it was good enough.

here are some of the arguments I have been hearing:

- bad acting
I have seen way worse

- unoriginal, rip off Miike
It's Hollywood, what do you expect? Plus Roth is honest enough to give Miike a cameo

- bad script
It's not perfect but the premise is very good. I love the idea that the whole thing is just a business. It's one horror movie that actually says something about our society.

- Unsympathetic leads
Man I can totally see myself being friends with those guys, in fact I can totally see myself as the lead character.

- silly coincidences near the end
Fair enough... but is it so bad? It's cinema after all.

- poorly shot and lit
I have to rewatch, but initial impression did not ring alarm bells.

Unscary. Horror films today just lack the scare factor. The only good thing about Hostel was the chicks

Gore is boring.

-

Why Roth is where he is at is a mystery; yes box office, yes actually making a film (Cabin Fever) but why Tarantino is all over his jock is beyond me. Or maybe that was a revenue ploy; attach name, get points ...

-

The first thing I hear Roth say on the hostel DVD (Was it in commentary or the making of ?) was a reference to him taking a 'big fat steamin sh**' . I immediately tuned out.

Guy is living the dream though; so what the hell do I know ?

-

I think of other directors that get noticed or have their names being made; and wonder 'What the hell ?'

Cabin Fever was boring. Surely not scary and not a groundbreaking moment in horror ala Texas Chainsaw, Halloween or The Hills Have Eyes and Roth doesn't seem to want to really say anything with his films; not in pursuit of a higher meaning in art ala Wes or PT Anderson or a James Mangold.

Hostel and Cabin Fever have practically 5 Star Averages on IMDB; so what gives ?

Whether or not his films make a profit is leaving me scratching my head at his films carrying the

AN ELI ROTH FILM ! announcement

I'll agree on the Eli Roth announcement thingy.

As for he and Tarantino... they're friends. They met somewhere I guess, have the same interests, and started hanging out. Tarantino obviously added his name to be exec to give the film cred and help it be seen.(and if you listen to the commentary with Tarantino and Roth on Hostel, it would seem that Tarantino gave him every idea for the film once Roth came up with the initial concept).

I really like Roth. He seems like a genuine down to earth guy who appreciates where he's gotten to. He has by far some of the best director commentaries I've heard, they're informative, interesting and funny as hell.

Just the fact that in such a "serious" gore fest as Hostel was, that they littered the sets with Glam Rock Posters of themselves(Roth and Above the Line Crew) everywhere throughout the film, tells me that he's getting to enjoy his dream, so I say Kudos to him.

I have no idea if he'll become a great horror director or not. If Hostel 2 makes money then he'll probably get a chance to do some sort of dream project, so that's when we'll see if he's got some real talent.

I wasn't overhelmed by Hostel by any means, but I'll admit when the guy was trying to escape I got into the film.(and I liked it how he f***ed up the guy who got his friend). Hostel was made for 2.5, so if you take that into consideration, that ain't that bad.(that #'s off the top of my head, it might be a bit off).

Gore IS boring.. but the gore in Hostel doesn't last very long...

I briefly read through the comments in IMDB. The public is divided into two camps; those who hate it because it doesn't match up to a classic horror, and those would champion it because it breaks most classic horror conventions.

By putting American Pie-like characters (or even plot) into this film, you put realistic young men full of testosterone into such situation is what makes this film, IMO, stand out, even original. Alot of people criticize the movie on that, but I see it as a strength, not short coming at all.

i thought it was shot very cool and was fun to watch nothing scares me in movies anymore but i enjoy watching it. but i can see where people might have not but hardcore horror fans make me laugh becuase they think whats horror is so awesome when it might not even be horrifying.

I haven't seen it; but not Gore in that context

I mean Gore for Gores sake. Which is Hostel. Hostel isn't attempting to tell us an interesting story, are they ?

-

And comparing the Roth/Hostel vehicle to Mel's Apocalypto ....

Well, come on. (Mentioning them in the same breath ....)

-

A recent analogy used is

'If they make a film about a behaeding, I do want too see the beheading.'

but in the case of Hostel's lacking; I want to see why the person is being beheaded (Apocalypto)

How he pled for his life was the best part of the movie. He switched to German when he realised that his torturer was German, pulling out all the stunts. I love how it wasn't subtitled. we don't need to know what exactly he was saying.

Hostel doesn't do anything that hasn't been done already; Texas Chainsaw, Suspiria, Dawn of the Dead. The Italian Giallo !

Why anyone would think Hostel is doing anything imaginative is laughable.

I'm not falling into either camp; it just was blase and not worth the hype. And with over 20,000 users rating it a 5.8; it appears the camp has spoken.

You haven't seen Hostel? Or Apocalypco?

Hostel is about 2 young American men, and an Icelander, going to a remote Bulgarian vlllage in search of beautiful woomen to score. But in the process they fall victim to a mass conspiracy, sponsored by the State and patroned by wealthy business men from all over the world, of a paid service of kidnapping and torturing tourists to death. Therefore, the gore IS relevant.

Now I have heard more interesting stories before, but this is not bad. What makes this movie different is that the bad guy is not some f**ked up psycho, its a group made up of normal, working people - from the chicks to the torturers to the slaughter house dude to the police. It managed to paint a darker picture to humanity than most horror films.

I totally understand, just worth clarifying for my sake. Also, Apocalypto was more action than horror. But yeah, I didn't want to mention **** verse awesome in the same 'breath', but its recent and its controversial. Just makin conversation. If you havent seen Apocalypto, go. Now. See it. Awesome.
