Checker Board of Death

I am trying to add a graphic to an old spot I created with FCP and Motion. I used the media manager to archive the project on DVD. I am able to open and play the project fine, but when I add any new graphics I loose all of my Motion elements. They keep there shape, but get bigger and the image is replaced with a pink and white "checker board of death" Any ideas on what is happening?

Are you working in Motion now, or FCP? I'm not familiar with the "checkerboard of death", that must be a Motion thing, eh?

No it is in FCP. I have never seen it befor either. The project copied to my computer fine. It appears normal untill I try to add a new .tiff. It does not matter which track I put the .tiff it gets the same result - pink and white checker board and loss of scale. But it does only affect the motion elements, so maybe it is a Motion thing.

No, "motion elements" controled by the Motion tab in the Viewer, and the application "Motion" are very different, seperate things.

I'd drop that TIFF into the Timeline and then double click it to open that into the Viewer and see what the Scale is set to.

Did you create something in the Motion application and then export it to FCP, is that what you did? And what does that have to do with a TIFF file? Are you trying to drop a TIFF file into an element of a clip created in the application Motion? Wouldn't you need to open that clip in Motion to change it's elements? I'm just not clear about what's going on.

Sorry for the confusion. I created elements in Motion application and exported the project to FCP. I did not create the entire FCP project in Motion - it brings my machine to a crawl.
The original FCP project had a Motion file and a couple of Tiff files and all was good. After I archived and re-imported the FCP project I needed to add another tiff. That is when the Motion application elements went to checker board and lost there scale - they got a lot bigger.
It was the Motion file that was afflicted. Could it be that archiving a motion file is no good?

How did you archive it? I have a suspicion about what happened, but I'd like to know how you archived this project and then reinstated it.

I used media manager: copy media, include render files, delete unused, use handles, include affiliate clips, duplicate selected items.
Saved it all to a new folder. burned it to CD.
I then copied and pasted that folder onto my system to reinstae.

Have any hard drive names changed since you archived it?
Have you changed versions of software since you archived it?
I can only suspect one of those. If that's not it, I'm stumped.

Sounds like Motion is looking for a media file and isn't finding it. That's why you're seeing the checkerboard. Open the Motion file in Motion itself and relink the "missing" media files. When you archived, the path of the files probably changed and Motion isn't smart enough to know where you put them. Good luck.

I'll give it a shot, but the media is there when I first open the re-instated project. It does not give me a Media Missing message, or any indication on the track itself.
