commercial shot in 24pn

Quick question. I shot a commercial over the weekend for an athletic club in 720p 24pn and would like to output to play for SD television. If I do an export using quicktime conversion to 29.97 ntsc will this work or is there a better solution to keep the film look since it is playing off a 23.98 timeline? Mind you this is my first attempt at over and undercrank footage.

Apple Pro Training Series, Compressor Quick-Reference Guide, only 20 some odd bucks.

Save your DVCPRO-HD 720p24 Sequence out as a self-contained QuickTime movie. Import it into Compressor. From the drop-down menu, go to Advanced Format Conversions and choose DV/NTSC Anamorphic. Render it out.

That should be all you need to do.

Hmm- would that cause a cadence issue though? Last time I checked Compressor did not add in pulldown properly- but I could be wrong. :) Chances are you could be better off doing a 23.98 SD version and then outputting that to tape in FCP where proper pulldown is added in realtime via DV firewire output. That has worked on FCP for years.

Compressor does a great job at format converting, if you use it properly. You could select the 24p NTSC setting if you wanted 24p NTSC. But personally, if I'm going to hand something over to a broadcast company, I just do regular 60i NTSC, and avoid a ton of potential headaches.

Thanks Ben and Noah for your responses as i am fairly new to the HVX200 and only want the best final product. I will try them both. As far as editing with the 23.98 time base its all new to me...

24p and transcoding between formats is new to a lot of folks. Only a year or two ago, it was all DV, that was it, one standard. DVCam was cool, but not a huge leap for NLE's to handle.

Now, HD is here, standards have been published, and look at the mess...

Ben,

You hit it... It is hard enough trying to stay ahead of the curve and I am still reading Barry's Book and learning the Hvx200 the best I can. To bad there isn't a bootcamp in Missoula, MT as it is the capital for the International wildlife film festival, Big sky film festival and more....
