One Mic To Rule Them All

I still believe that the AKG sounds better than the Oktava, but not by much. I believe that the Oktava is such a top notch mic and so close to the AKG that I got rid of my AKG and now use the Oktava.

And what do you use for a shotgun now? 4073a?

As I understand it, the AKG is better for most of us random amateurs because the Oktavia is so sensitive. So how recommended would it be to merely go with the ck93 and the AT4073a, getting the best of both worlds [in that price range]?

I own both the ck93 and the oktava and the ck93 sounds noticeably better, richer and fuller. The oktava is not that much more sound sensative but it is stupidly sensative to wind and vib. The oktava is awesome if you are strapped for cash, but if you can spring the ck93, do it!

I can afford the ck93, so I think I'm going that route with the 4073a as a shotgun. Now I've just gotta utilize this forum's search feature and find out all the additional accessories I need for both.

If you own the oktava you absolutely have to have the Baby Ball Gag (usually shortened on this site to simply BBG) but the ck93 does not need it. In fact, if you are using the ck93 indoor exlusively, the foam they give you with the mic for free is plenty! Just make sure you get a good shockmount and you're good to go. As for the 4073a, I would really recommend getting the K-Tek kzep ($263 at Trew Audio). I just bought one for my mkh60 and it is awesome. $263 for a shockmount, windshield and fuzzy windjammer! It's a helluva deal.

Can you link me? I couldn't find it on their site, nor with Google's help.

So what would you consider a good shock mount?

What are your thoughts on the preamp for the ck93? As I understand it, it's not neccessary so could I get by without it for say a month or so? I'm just ready to get some decent audio equipment bought so I can begin shooting some things, but if the preamp for the ck93 really, really, really makes a difference, then I can wait it out. For that matter, is it a worthwhile investment to begin with? I'm assuming that it is, but I don't like assumptions that cost over $20.

Thanks for all the advice.

All modular mic systems are worthless without the dedicated PS (power supply) that's masking as a pre-amp (as newbies mistakenly call them)... in this case I'm sure you're referring to the se300b.

If there was a way to cut a standard microphone apart just below the diaphragm... imagine using a bandsaw to cut off the top bubble of an interview mic... leaving half the circuitry in the other piece... well that's what the modular systems are doing FOR you... you can change out the caps, but the caps themselves are WORTHLESS without the rest of the dedicated circuitry. It's a system that can't function without both halves.

Just like Oktava (needs little stubby mk012 ps), Sennheiser ME line (needs k6 or k6p), AKG ULS (needs c480b), etc. etc.

If you want a ck93 then you MUST have an se300b (or buy one) to use the ck93.

No prob... people think they can get an me66 for $180 all the time. Nope... gotta' have the k6 or k6p... it's a common misconception.

The good news is that quality sound is easier (and cheaper) to attain then quality picture is. Get used to the cost of this stuff... it's "cheaper" then you think.

Yeah. I'm just a college kid on a minimum wage job and all this stuff is still within my grasp. I'm very thankful for the times I live in.

ok it's been a while but let me go ahead and post here

so I've been searching for indoor mics.
after searching and reading posts here it looks like the AKG CK93 is a good choice for me.
however, the last post was 4 year ago so I wasn't sure if this mics stand as good as it stands right now....

so my question is,
are there other mics that have been released within the past 4 years that might be as good as the AKG CK93?
also are there any sound samples for this mic? (can't find a single one)

Hi Rvvac

The AKG Blue line modular system (SE 300b base and interchangeable caps) is still a very solid choice and readily available, there are often very good deals in the used market. We have the shotgun, hyper and lav caps, The 93's are our primary mics for interiors and we're very happy with them. Hope that helps.

Best wishes
