night at the museum

saw the film today. it was really good. funny. well shot, well acted. i loved Mickey Rooney and Dick Van Dyke in the film. Stiller was good, as well as Robin Williams. the monkey in the film was hilarious, and the comedy between Owen Wilson and Steve Coogan was great. check it out.

Loved the idea after seeing the previews. What kid with an overactive imagination hasn't imagined the exhibits in a museum coming alive? Just hearing the concept would have made me want to go see it.

There are a lot of cool bits. Mickey Rooney is great - he makes a whole slew of g-rated pejoratives somehow seem sinister. I'm not going to spoil it and list them but I was pretty amused. The guy is class.

Yet as many cool parts to the movie as there are, the sum of the parts doesn't add up to all that much.

The beginning is really slow - just get us to the museum damnit! - and is just there to set up a sappy cliched Hollywood storyline. The storyline is the weakest part of the movie - everything else is great.

This reviewer echoes what I was thinking after I left...

http://www.mountainx.com/movies/n/nightmuseum.php

"It quickly becomes apparent that the film is pretty much a high concept in search of a plot."

"Much of the film's logic is wanting, especially since it makes a point that the wax figures of historical characters aren't the historical characters, yet insists on affording them the knowledge and traits of those characters."

great family movie - kids calling each other "dum-dum" and asking for "gum-gum" when they return to school next week will drive their teachers nuts - but a little disappointing overall.

yeah...I guess I'm the first one not to like this movie? I dunno, maybe it was b/c there was so many annoying people around me (it was prolly one of the most uncomfortable theater experiences I've ever had.....the people sitting next to me brought their 3 month old baby...and yeah you can prolly guess how that worked out).

Otherwise, I guess I just found it boring, and the kid that played ben's son...wasn't very good in that role.

Just saw the film tonight after reading this thread. I had absolutely no desire to see it before reading the thread, and I have to say I enjoyed it.

Much of the film's logic is wanting

Like everything in the museum coming to life at night? I think I can handle the fact that they are just wax and other materials and not the dead corpses of the historical figures yet they have the knowledge of the figures. That's a stretch I can make.

A T-Rex skelton coming to life. Now come on. That's silly.

its an ok movie to watch i do like the armagedon shot with owen, when i saw it I like this is such and owen shot lol, he had his face like he was a model, lol. either case it a good movie and i think it was great movie for kids. If kids had more movies like jumanji like i had when i was growing up.

i saw the movie yesterday with my daughter. I thought it was quite entertaining. My movie going experience is sadly coming to an end. It seems that every time I go, talking is rampant, cell phones and such going on. Unless it changes, I will either go to the DGA and see movies or wait 'til they come out on dvd.
Also I was pleased to see that Ben Garant and Tom Lennon wrote the screenplay. They are the Exec Producers and Stars of the show i coordinate "Reno 911".

Mav: what theaters are you going to?

I hate the Arclight.

I love the chinese.

But I tend to go to the Burbank AMC.

Sometimes there are punks, but 80% good experiences. I was raised on hating theater talkers (not by parents, but by "industry" insiders) so it is built into me to feel and hear every bump or sound.

Just curious where all your bad experiences are.

I think the Grove is pretty bad with all the parents and little kids.

The biggest problem is parents that think they are above getting a babbysitter for their "date night", or the one's that have no idea that an 11:30pm showing is not the time to take your 3-7 year olds to Deja Vu.

this thread is like my worst nightmare. not disputing that anyone here genuinely liked it. it's just that i'm surprised because frankly, this movie makes me want to eat my face.

arclight is the only theater that i can depend on to filter out scenarios like the one you describe. what dont you like about it? the reserved seating, 21+ screeenings, their mini festivals, the attentiveness to picture and sound quality, discussions with the filmmakers, or is it the fact that they have the best popcorn in town? what's not to like?

This type of film is for families. It's light and vanilla flavored and designed to make money. I don't think anyone is expecting any real substance from a film like this. And let us be honest ...

Owen and Stiller are two funny dudes. The reality Cyg, is that Hollywood needs films like these; it is what enables them to make the more intimate and intelligent art projects.

yeah thats what i siad its a good movie for kids instead of movies like cheaper by the dozen and the lizzie maguire movie. kids have only a good cgi film to look foward to as of lately.

thus, my surprise at the reactions here. and for the record, I consider a good laugh, "substance". from what i've seen, it doesnt look any better than the two flicks spidey listed. i'm curious what made posters here w/o kids run out to see it. was it the drawing power of robin williams' screaming and mugging?

i watch everything . i go to see movies almost every other day when a new movie comes out i watch it. I like to see hwat every film makers got and and what works and how people respond saw the pursuit of of happyness yesterday, now that was a good movie.

Like I said... I had no desire, but there is nothing else out there I want to watch - actually a couple at the Arclight, but I hate the place. I enjoyed it. Not great. Wont see it again. But I laughed. It was fun. Like Jackass II - not a great cinemtaic achievement but a damn good time. This was less so, but still fun. They dont all have to be great, they just need to not suck. This didn't.

Arclight. Oh the Hollywood pretentiousness. When the Arclight first opened, I was first in line. Dinner in the lobby, some adult beverages, no waiting in line, I got my seats well ahead of time and had perfect center, no jackasses coming in 20 minutes in and loudly talkijng about where to sit. All was great in this new theater Utopia. The movies were better, stories made sense, cinematographers no longer had to light, the glory of the Arclight did their jobs for them and cancer was cured.

Then we woke up. The place bites. I have gone online 2.5 hours ahead of time to get seats for a non-opening weekend, non-primetime showing and couldn't get a seat anywhere near the center. "Every seat a good seat"? My ass. Forget trying to get tickets AT the theater and get a good seat. I would rather stand in line an hour and get seats I want then jump through the Arclights hoops. Hell, unless it's opening night at primetime, you never really have to wait in line.

Yes I hate the talkers at the theaters that the masses, lowlives, and plebes attend. But go to the Arclight and you get just as many talkers. Only now they are the pretentious asses that worked on the film, think they are better than everyone, also talk through the whole thing, then when you whisper, asking for a Milk-Dud, they stop mid sentence just to tell you to shooosh. Bite me.

Opinionated much? Yeah. Sometimes.

Oh. And I dont eat Popcorn. But as all good Angelinos know, the best popcorn left when the Peppertree went out of business. And by "good Angelinos" I dont mean Boston transplants that think they are too good to enter the Valley, let alone leave the Westside.

GageFX,
I went over to the AMC Fallbrook 16. Worst seats in the world. I mean uncomfortable.
It seems like most movie theatres are like that, noisy that is. I was working on National Treasure in Philly a couple years ago. we had two or three days off a week. We saw everything that was out at that time in multiple theatres. They were all the same. Matinees with 10 people in them and yahoos were talking or talking on their cell phones.
I enjoyed "Night" it was purely Hollywood escapism at it's best or worst if you will. Entertainment and suspension of belief. After all that's what a lot of movies are, unless you are into the
"true meaning of life". Frankly, I have the true meaning of life around me every day .
So a bit of laughter and suspension of where the next mortgage payment is going to come from is a welcome change even if it is only for 2 hours.
And i liked the t rex, it was well done.

gagefx,
BTW did you ever get to go to the Cinerama Dome? It was before the Arclight. One screen easily 70 feet across. Absolutely the best theatre for premieres that there was in Hollywood.
I saw "Red Dawn" there and Remo Williams among others.
