shooting 16 with a 35 light meter

no problem, learning is a process. It may sound terribly cliche' but, dare I say it, "there are no stupid questions".

A light meter measures light; there is no such thing as a light meter specifically for 16 or one for 35. What you want to look for is primarily an incident light meter, it'll be much more useful in more situations than a dedicated spot meter (although having both is, of course, better).
