Help! I Don't Know Why My Photos Come Out Looking Dark

When I took two wedding dinners in a ballroom recently, only sometimes my external flash gun attached to my Nikon D50 camera will fire. At most other times, the flash just wouldn't light up & the pictures taken comes out looking very dark & under exposed. I'm using the full manual setting with a shutter speed of between 60 to 100 & aperture of F5.6. I don't know if it's the settings on the D50 itself, or the flash gun has issues, because sometimes, the flash goes off, at most other times, it just doesn't flash.

Before I take any photo, I compose my shot, press the trigger button half-way down to focus & then press it all the way down. But there is often a 6-7 second delay before the picture atcually gets taken. Is this normal? Below are the detailed list of settings on my camera I'm using.

Best I can do:

Here is a post in DPreview:

Hello folks... Quick question... Is there any way to change the settings on my D50 so that the camera fires regardless of the camera confirming the focus whilst using autofocus? I have noticed recently, especially in low light, that the AF will be spot on where I want it, however the shutter won't release when I completely depress the button because the camera doesn't think the focus is there... Can something be done to over come this, besides switching to MF mode? Thanks for any suggestions

And just to be clear, you are AUTO focusing, yes? "Full Manual" would imply completely manual (including focus) as opposed to "M" Manual EXPOSURE.

Either way, hop the link helps.
