Daylight/Incandescent/Tungsten at Once

I am going to be shooting the interiors of some large houses coming up and running into a slight dilemma. I need to show lights in the house turning on and off with daylight streaming in from the windows. I may also need to use some of my lights as fill in larger rooms. I'm worried about white balance with three different sources.

The best is obviously going to gel the tungsten's and daylight to the room lights but I don't know if I want to spend hundreds on large gels for the windows if I don't have to.

What do you think of gelling my lights to daylight and then white balance to the daylight? This would leave the ceiling lights on their own.

What are the fixtures in the house? I'd assume they'd be much closer in temp to the tungstens than the daylight. Do you intend to have them in the shot, or just illuminating the room?

Without knowing the specifics of what you're doing, my guess would be to split the difference. Use like a 1/2 CTB on the tungstens, as well as the practicals. Then you'll still have a color difference, but a more natural looking one... you won't have to gel the windows... and you won't be taking as hard of a stop-loss on your lights and the house lights as if you actually tried to match daylight spot-on.

Yes I will be shooting the lights themselves. I haven't seen the house since it's in another state so I'm just trying to be prepared. I do know that the windows are plentiful and tall while the ceilings are vaulted to up to 2 stories. I will try your idea at home and see if I can get decent results.

Why not just go with HMI's to fill the room, balance to daylight and then the practicals will have a warm glow to them.

If he's trying to keep it so cheap that he doesn't want to gel windows, I'm fairly confident that HMI's are out of the question as well.

Yes, HMIs would consistently be a great choice for a lot of lighting solutions if they weren't so darn expensive.

With HMIs as fills and full daylight from windows nobody would notice turning the room lights on and off...

How about trying to find the right time of the day to balance the lights without fills, or just a bit of blue gelled soft halogens?

If you dont see the raw bulbs in the fixtures you can replace them with 5000k fluo craft lights and use ctb on your lights to bring everything into the same neighborhood.
