Anyone care to take the challenge? (or just want to help)

I'm working on a project for a couple's 60th wedding anniversary. One of the images I have been given is a scan of the husband's Military papers. But it is badly wrinkled, the corners are bent/torn, and there is tape on the bottom portion.

I wonder if anyone is able, or willing, to try and clean the image up. I've tried my hand at it, but my photoshop skills are quite limited. I will continue working on it myself, but some of you guys pull off some amazing things with PS so I figured it couldn't hurt to ask.

You can download the scanned image here (one file is the front of the doc and the other file is the back):

http://www.nrestudios.com/images/military_doc.tif (~21MB)
http://www.nrestudios.com/images/military_doc_back.tif (~21MB)

Thanks for any help,
Larry

What is the final output of the project? ie: will this document then be printed as if it were the original - nice and clean, like back in the day - or will it be part of a composition?

I played with it a little - nothing of final quality - and was able to get rid of tape and tears and folds and whatnot, but in the process I edited out all the character of the document. Honestly, if I were to do that, I would rather recreate the document using text and matching fonts and set in the images and borders rather than try to just clean this.

You may as well edit out the couple's character lines on their faces along with those of the document.

Side humorous note (humorous to me): I'm currently working on a project where I am starting with nothing and creating a realistic looking worn paper effect. I now think I need to add some tape.

This will be used in a video montage project. I don't know exactly how I will be using it yet, but wanted to have a clean version for "insets" of the original document, or something of that nature.

That is funny that you are going the other direction...hopefully this document gave you some useful ideas :)

You might be right about re-creating it from scratch...might be the easiest way. I'll see how hard that will be to do.

Thanks,
Larry

Larry, that document it not in good shape. I could rebuild it, even replace the text, make it look new, but that would, detract from it's importance. All the rebuilding and replacing.

My advice, get a towel, and ironing board and an iron. LIGHTLY mist the towl, and putting the towel on top of the document, iron out some of the kinks and nasties.

use a clean or new white towel and mist it with distilled water, and shut off the mist or steam function on the iron. Then, get it nice and flat, you don't have to use super high heat, and take your time.

Then scan it again, and cleanup will be easier, and you dont need to worry about damaging the document.
