Why can I only capture 09:25:15 at a time????

When I first got FCP, I can capture the whole tape if need be. But, for some reason, now, I can only capture 9min,25sec,15frames at a time.

I run the latest FCP, btw.

How can I capture more than this amount?

It's under system systems, right? I see a part under the scratch disks tab that says, "Minimum allowable free space on scratch disks." In the box to the right of that statement it says 2047MB. So this must be the 2 gig limit CaptainMench is talking about.

I randomly changed it to 20,000MB. 20 Gigs should be plenty of space if I'm just working in DV and HDV, right?

Tell me if I'm on the right path now, guys. Thanks!

No -- you aren't... hang on for a sec.

Minimum allowable free space means if your drive drops BELOW this available free space on your drive you WON'T be able to capture ANYTHING.

What you need to do is set that down again right now. Then, go to your UTILITIES folder in your APPLICATIONS folder and find Disk Utility.

Open it up and click on your scratch drive. Tell us what format that is. Should be MacOS Extended... is it FAT32?

Okay, I went and switch it back to 2047MB.

In Disk Utility, I'm confused on mulitple points. It says that it is formated as a MS-DOS File(FAT32). BUT, then I go under the RAID tab and it states: volume format is Mac OS Extended (Journaled).

Plus, there seems to be more than on Mac OS extended format: journaled, case-sensitive journaled, case-sensitive, and just plain 'ol Mac OS extended.

So what do I do now?

BTW, thank you for your time CaptainMench!

You are beginning to enter a world I know nothing about... RAID.

AND you aren't going to like what I tell you next...

You are going to need to reformat your drive.

BUT - tell me if this is part of a RAID or a stand-alone drive. Most of us use OS Extended (Journaled)... not sure why - someone told me once (a long time ago) that was what was needed. This case-sensitive thingie came along after that.

IF it is part of the RAID I'll need to do some more hunting for an answer as to why it raided that drive that way and the whole raid another. FAT32 has long had a 2 gig file transfer limit that is a mess for us video editors.

I hope you've got room elsewhere to transfer those files off that drive so you can reformat it.

It is a standalone external drive. It isn't RAIDed. It's just under that tab.

I was afraid you were going to say that, about reformatting the drive. I'm going to have to work with it like it is now. I'm in the middle of a project, but do that afterwards.

Is there away to do it, without erasing any files?

Short answer "no."

Long answer, "still no."

Sorry, a format is effectively a complete data wipe. Thankfully drives are cheap. Check out the MyBook drives. I'm really happy with mine.
