The Painted Veil - a public service announcement...

do not see the motion picture, "the painted veil", unless you have developed a perverse appreciation for superficial characterizations, pedestrian camerawork and a complete lack of subtext.

the trailer is what sold me. ironic that i cut and produce trailers for a living and got suckered by one.

well, look. there were definitely people around me that liked it. and i'm completely baffled as to why. foremost, i was completely amazed that the film had absolutley no subtext. at all. everything, e v e r y t h i n g, was right there on the surface. no layers, no depth. and at times laughable.....

SPOILERS
....it played that familiar note of our main character catching a glimpse of a dark, mysterious asian woman lurking in the haze of an opium den. only to find out later that she is actually a sweet, loving girl. how ironic!!! why she was nothing like the music insinuated only 30 minutes ago!!! so, i saw that coming a mile away. and then there's the completely insulting characterization of the incompetant buffoon of a soldier. where are these people in real life? i've never met anyone who had the essential personality of a dog. seriously, i'm not oversimplifying it. the character could have been played by a dog. only in the movies, i guess. and last, to hear a nun relate her relationship with God to the main character's romantic problems was just, just juvenile in its execution. and the chase scenes! they really looked like they shot the rehearsals. you could sense when the mob was getting their cue to run!

do not see 'the paint-by-numbers veil'
