Name your 3 TOP film directors

Good you haven't listed yourself as "MYSELF". Lower case means you still respect other directors ;-)

Hitchcock (He invented the techniques)
Spielberg (He took the techniques and pushed them different ways)
Zemeckis (Although not the best, he's still the only director that has never made a movie I didn't like)

Cheers to a man after my own heart.
Great ****ing list!!!

Kubric (Always original)
Orsen Wells (Noir god)
Spielberg/Ridley Scott (I swear their the same guy)

top three?

top three?

I go:

1. KUBRICK.

2. SPIELBERG.

3. ALTMAN.

w/ BERGMAN + HITCHCOCK right afterwards.

Wes Anderson - Whether you like his movies or hate them, you have to admit that he stops at nothing in creating a comprehensive world view. You can't mistake a Wes Anderson film for anyone else's... except maybe Jared Hess, who is a knock-off hack.

Steven Soderbergh - Not one mention of him in the six pages I read of this thread. What's wrong with you people? I may not like all of his movies, but I don't think there's anyone else out there doing work as varied and interesting as he is... and succeeding most of the time.

Jean-Pierre Jeunet - All of his films feel so astoundingly choreographed, meticulously planned, beautifully realized. He manages to make even simple mundane details feel somehow epic in scope, worth hearing about.

Honorable mentions: Steven Spielberg, Sofia Coppola, Ridley Scott, Michael Mann

Possibly the most overrated director I can think of. The man brings nothing to the table; nothing new, nothing inspiring, blase style

I do not get it.

A few of his films have been good despite him telling the story, but for the most part he's a super hack.

I'm going to have to agree. I took a look at his resume and as a director, I have a hard time seeing what all the fuss is about.

Out of all the complaints you could take with the man, this is by far the last thing I'd expect to hear. I don't seen how you can watch Full Frontal, Solaris, Gray's Anatomy, Traffic... and say these movies aren't at least more interesting than whatever sources they're borrowing from. And that's not even counting Schizopolis. Hell, he even manages to make big-budget empty schlock like Ocean's Twelve at least feel mostly interesting.

On the other hand, I think De Palma is possibly the most overrated director I can think of. So I guess it's no surprise we're not going to agree here.

My memory kicked in and I think I'm replacing Michael Mann on my list with Jean-Pierre Jeunet.

Tough to narrow it down to three, but these three have definitely made an impact on me.

1. David Lean
2. John Schlesinger
3. Scorsese

I think Soderbergh tries too hard to be indie (indie for indie's sake), I think Clooney has more talent/taste than him as a director. But I can stand Soderbergh. I can't take Ed Zwick, he's too sentimental and revisionist for me.

I coud easily throw Kubrick on the list, and it feels wrong to not even mention Hitchcock.
