Alright Guys and Gal's, Im starting a Little Sociology project for my class. I would like to have as Many of The DVXusers to complete this Simple Online Survey. I Hope that the Results will be interesting. But Even if you Dont have anything Amazing to tell me, Please take 2 minutes out of your day and complete it!

In Less than 2 weeks, i will post my Findings here on DVX user!

http://miniman.questionform.com/public/video

PLEASE:

Only fill it out once
Have Serious Responses
Make the Information Easy to understand

MiniMan - I tried to fill-out the form but couldn't because it wouldn't allow one field to be left blank. Sorry. Good luck!

If you Dont want to fill in one of the Fields, Just Select other, or Type in "N/a" or "Decline to state"
- Thanks!

I started to fill out the form, but immediately stalled - I can't see how it will be collecting useful information without some more detail about what we do. For example, I primarily shoot live classical music events; I'm a contractor and my own boss. I have a very diverse clientelle - racially, ethnically, and by nationality. Furthermore, I often don't meet new clients in person before a gig. Is this the kind of situation you're interested in? I don't think it's comparable to, say, a production cinematographer for hire, or even a wedding videographer.

Further, I think that a more pertinent question than "how many gigs do you get a year" is perhaps "how often are you turned down for gigs (10% of the time, 50% of the time, 90% of the time, etc.). It's tough, because different people are looking for different numbers of gigs (part time, full time, etc.); gigs last different amounts of time; some people do everything, from planning to post, while others just shoot and hand over a tape; etc. And, of course, people market themselves better or worse, and at different stages of their careers will have more or less success depending on their connections, etc.

Anyway, I like the idea of the survey, but I wonder if it might be better as a discussion where we can all see the anecdotal information, because i don't know if you'll get enough answers to overcome all these variables. In any case, good luck, and keep us posted!

Thank you guys to much for the Feedback! Im Still a Student at this sociology thing, but this is for a project and it needed to be about somthing i like ( Video ), but with Enough Defined Variables so that i can have facts to show my teacher. I can still Edit/Add in question to the Survey, So, if a couple more people agree with you i will consider changing one of my subquestions.

Sounds good... I always enjoyed these sorts of projects; makes me nostalgic.

I think you may want to add in some questions about whether people think racial issues have HELPED their careers in any way, too. In my experience, at least, there are some racial groups that have a very strong community, and landing a client in there will often get word-of-mouth going among the whole group. Some groups may prefer to hire someone with a similar background (which me be a more "acceptable" way of saying they don't want to hire someone of a different background...). I think these inverse issues may be really enlightening.

Do you feel that you have ever been racially discrimination within the Video production field?

should read, 'Do you feel that you have ever been racially discriminated against within the Video production field.' I know that your major is Sociology, and not English, but if you want to communicate your findings (not to mention collect data with the greatest possible accuracy) then you might want to be more careful with your use of language...

I agree that the questionnaire could probably benefit from additional questions to give you more datum points with which to work.

And, the short answer is that people predisposed to find racism lurking under every rock and behind every tree (you know who I'm talking about) will insist that race colors everything, including video production business opportunities, and people who believe that the profession is basically a meritocracy (or at least, a color-blind dogpile), will dismiss the racism-mongers for what they are.

I Actually Cant stand this Sociology Class, and this is my final project :-D

But Yes - I should have fixed it, and i will when i get back from class.

I filled it out.

I dont want to start a flame war cuz I know this forum frowns upon indepth political/social discussion but I think there is a certain amount of lets just say "hidden biased"

mainly these issues surround peoples social status, wealth, background and their class.... I think race plays a factor in it but is mainly about status and class

of course the entertainment/film industry attracts insecure people that have un-desirable personality traits, thats just a sad fact..... insecure people with A LOT of money and power = elitism and the perpetuation of current social ills that are hindering our society

I could go off on a deep deep rant but I will end it there.

Some Great Responses im seeing from you guys!
Some Early Trends:
Most People Belive that Its the quality of your Work, not your race.
Most people Have Not been Treated diffrently because of there race.

Keep up the Surveys, i only have 11 so far guys, I need atleast 20 and hoping for 40+. So if you know anyone that isnt a member here, but works in the video field, please have them fill it out!

I can't speak more authoritatively than anyone else, outside of my personal experience - which is that no one give a damn what color/gender/religion/orientation/class/whatever you are, if you can do the job on schedule and to budget. Period. Your "status" is based upon what you have demonstrated you can *do*.

Well, okay, that's why I signed up...

Sure, we're up to our armpits in wealthy, influential, insecure elitist people whose priorities - in this particular business - have very, very, very little to do with race. And when they do, it's usually in the exact opposite direction, to the 'keep minority-group members down' philosophy. Bend-over-backwards opposite, as a matter of fact.

well I figured someone would quickly take everything I said out of context and chime in with sarcastic remarks.....

which is exactly why I wont bother adding fuel to the fire

sad max, that is the way you believe..... so be it..... thats your god given right

I look at the world differently.

Not sure where you're taken out-of-context, or where anything sarcastic was said...but I share your disinterest in arguing about it.

No objection or criticism implied, regarding the way you - or anybody else - look at the world. I'm sure your perspective on the entertainment business is formed by your experience within it, as my perspective is formed by mine.

yes my views on the entertainment industry are drawn from some of my experiences sure.

but more importantly, I draw from years of study and research and observation....and not just on one particular segment of the "entertainment industry" but also on socio/political/economic history and policy

politics, economics and social injustices are the main reason I decided to become a filmmaker..... they are something that I study in depth

but this forum is not designed for the dissection of those issues and arguing/debating those issues are NOT the reason I come here..... so I'll leave it at that

however, if you do wanna talk/debate some issues and what have you, drop me an email jacob@roadwerkpictures.com

Its good to see some people getting into it!
I still need more data people, please take 1 or 2 min out of your busy day and fill out this survey!
