As DVX100 users know the audio output on the headphone jack is not as high as some would like. So for those who would like a inexpensive solution try Boostaroo.

I bought on Friday at Bestbuy for $20 (it was in the car stereo section) and we had a shoot on Saturday and it was very helpful. It's a two camera shoot, a DVX100 and a DVX100a. Going from the headphone levels in the 100a to the 100 is pretty noticeable (I read it was a 6dB difference), but with the Boostaroo it gives a nice boost in audio (4dB according to Boostaroo), plus it has 2 extra jacks, so the camera operator, boom operator, and director could hear the audio coming into the camera.

If you do throw it on the 100a or 100b be aware that you will hear distortion, but according to Boostaroo its coming from the device and not your audio. Apparently there's a 1% distortion in audio due to boosting it for your headphones. Of course this doesn't affect your actual audio at all.

Check it out if you don't like the audio monitoring levels from the 100 headphone jack.

I use my David Clarks(I'm a pilot also) with an adapter plug and my volume is great on my 100b. IF it's too quiet you're probably not using a good set of headphones.

The DVX100 is 6db lower than the DVX100a and b. Boosting the headphone output was one of the 20 + enhancements to the 100a.

Yes, I'm aware that the A and B have a boosted output, I've also read in Barry's book that the there is an impedance mismatch between the camera and lower end headphones, resulting in them not being loud enough. Supposedly professional headphones work fine and have plenty of volume.

With that said, I've never messed with an original DVX, so I can't make an authoritive statement. If you don't mind could you tell us what kind of headphones you are using? It's possible that at only 20 bucks, someone might come out ahead by still buying cheap headphones and a boostaroo versus buying an expensive set.

Still, thanks for sharing this info.
