is there a worse marketing campaign right now than PS3?

I was looking up at this billboard ad for the PS3 today and it had what I can only describe as a chess piece that was sliced at the bottom exposing, I believe, blood, and then a PS3 on the other side.

WHAT????

These commercials for PS3s feature white rooms and babies exploding. Who did they hire to do these things? The team that does those awful sprite commercials?

Whoever is in charge of marketing this system is failing miserably. Even when they show the game footage, I'm like... "that looks about as good as Ninetendo 64". Do I smell disaster for this system or can they right the ship?

You are talking about the PS3, for free, you came in here and posted about the PS3 making possibly the unaware people actually aware of the system. Thats what its all about. I personally like the commercials. Better than the competitions commercials which are trying either too hard or just dont get it.

ps3 commercial with the baby doll is awful. no one gets it and everyone thinks it's just creepy.

of the next gen consoles, gears of war is the best commercial, imo.

I have to disagree. The Gears of War commercial is terribly cliche'. Its the furthest thing from hip

There is something haunting about the Gears of War commercial that I really dig. As far as the PS3 marketing, they could stamp PS3 on a turd, and people would still buy the console. Why? Because it's new, therefore, must be better.

But, if it's the same one I think it is, it doesn't play the last generation of games. So now, you get to toss all the old stuff, and buy more games for the new console.

PS3 is off to a terrible start. Sony has botched this launch in more ways than one. Too expensive, too rare, too redundant. That said, I believe they're only surrendering market share.

PS3 will still sell aplenty, once Sony finally manages to get them on store shelves. Meanwhile, Microsoft solidifies its next-gen lead, and Nintendo enjoys fresh momentum.

I really enjoy their commercials. The design is creepy yet intelligent. Their processor is ****ing amazing, they can crunch some real numbers. I like seeing Nintendo gaining ground again, esp w/ their DS.

I think MS' new box will be a big hit, but the PS3 is pretty powerful.

The real winner here is IBM, they be makin all the chips!

the gears of war trailer almost made me want to buy an xbox 360... the ps3 ads are scaring me, but further than that, there is no ps3s on the shelves, and no wiis, why the hell would they pound on us with ads? Give me an add saying my store has one for me!

speaking of the wii : http://www.wiihaveaproblem.com
enjoy :)

I do not believe the PS3 marketing team went into a small room and came up with "Let's make the worst billboards/ads/commercials possible so that people will talk about how bad the PS3s billboards/ads/commercials are, which will in turn spark debate and lead to sales."

There is only one company who came up with this kind of campaign and actually make it work. And that is, of course, when Coke fraudently "changed" their formula for good (yeah right), which in turn sparked outrage, which in turn created free publicity, which in turn "forced them" (yeah right) to bring back original coke.

I dunno, the marketing campaign that had them drawing graffiti on buildings was pretty bad.

Or the raccoons or dustballs or whatever they were that sat there chanting their desire to have intercourse with the Playstation Portable, that was pretty bad too.

The new Halo 3 commercial is very well done. I personally like the GOW comm, I don't see how it's cliche.

In regards to their current ad campaign, I can envision the marketing team constantly referencing the Chris Cunningham PS commercials and trying to find a way to capitalize like that againn.

The Halo 3 commercial was such a let down to the gaming community who expected gameplay not "CG + Live Action" which is what bungie is saying it is.

I'd have to disagree. They're relying on word of mouth and buzz to promote it. The tv spots are just more branding and presence than having to sell the actual unit features.

The PS3's going on ebay for thousands of dollars are testiment that the marketing in SOME fashion or another is a blazing success. The demand is huge. Once they start making them in masses, they'll also sell in masses.

I don't know that I would agree with that. More likely, it is a testiment of rabid gamers with more money than common sense.

With games moving more into the mainstream with each iteration of the consoles (PS3, Wii, 360) the marketing has to change to from the staid tradition of screenshots to something more. Gamers can go online or to a bookstore to see screenshots, why do they need more on TV? I think by using creative concepts you open up to a wider market share.

For example, I'm not an avid gamer, but I like games. I want to buy a new system, and I've never been interested in Halo, even with all the hype. After watching that commercial I'm more interested in the game than ever before, and I'm watching merely for artistic purposes (critique, research, etc). So, imagine the average consumer, which are a lot like me, they will probably be floored and want to find out more, is that not the point? By showing just screenshots/people playing the games you immediately alienate a segment of the market, and with all the buzz about the next gen of gaming, no company wants to lose out on that.

Take the current PS3 campaign, say what you will, it works, even though some might not like it. Here we are on an internet forum talking about it...I haven't seen any threads on Wii's marketing campaign. My girlfriends was clamoring about the commercials just because of how strange they are. Sony has always branded the playstation like that, it's keeping up with it and it works.

i like there stuff but i think for people wh o are around 20 something eenjoy them. We enjoy them when we saw them first when the baby started crying we thought awesome this thing is gonna be ****inf rad.

the halo 3 commerical says nothing but hey another halo... but wheres the story arch... at least square soft tells you something with their promotions.

I didn't understand what they were thinking with the baby commercial until my sister in law (a marketing student) saw it and immediately said: "Oh.. they are advertising gaming for the next generation".... riiiight....

what about the one with the evil UFO PS3s flying in over a dark rainy city? or the eggs that smash against a wall before the wall spits out crows? very.... interesting

i'm just not that impressed with the graphic jump in these next generation systems. I have bought every major gaming system over the past 15 years and for the first time I see no reason to buy these new systems. That's mainly because each system throughout history has launched with a "wow" game -- something that you had never seen before where you were just like "I HAVE to have that game" (Sonic, Halo, Super Mario 64, Asteroids). I guess the pressures are so intense on these companies these days and there is more money/shareholders/deadlines that they just launch before they have one of these must-have games. And I believe it really hurts the system.

The last game that really wowed me, where I was like, "I've never seen anything like that before" was Shadow of The Collosses on Playstation 2. Wow, what an amazing game. They give me something like that, I'll buy their system, marketing or no marketing.

p.s. Halo 2's abrupt ending where they obviously ran out of time did a lot of damage to me with the franchise. If they're not going to give 100% all the way through and create a kick-ass ending like they did with the first, why should I shell out for their game? I'll take a wait-and-see attitude with Halo 3.
