I'm not that savy on hard drives and what I should buy for HD footage so I need to ask, is this a good hard drive and a good price point?

Ultra ATA-133
Spindle Speed (RPM) 7200
Buffer Memory 16MB
Average Latency (msec) 4.17

Maximum External Transfer Rate (Mbits/sec) 133
Shock, Operating: 2 msec (Gs) 63
Shock, Nonoperating: 2 msec (Gs) 300

Thats not too bad at all, but note it is ATA, not sATA, so just make sure you have the correct connections in your computer.

you would want an sATA but if youre computer doesnt have sATA than this will do

Yes. If you're computer has the proper connections, I would recommend going with SATA II. You will be looking at 3Gbs/sec. It will be a good deal faster. If your computer has the proper connections. I think you will also find that the price difference is very little, if any at all, most of the time.

Good luck,
Jason

Ok good, I'm glad I didn't just blindly buy it... lol

I noticed that the hard drive in my mac had a different connection plug then the hard drive that recently failed on me.
Do any of you mac owners know what kind of hard drives (connection wise) are in the duel G5's? I'd like this next hard drive to connect directly inside of the mac rather then through an external drive case via firewire.

Internal drives on G5's are SATA. You can buy the drive and slide it right in there. Personally I would buy a Seagate drive, I've found them to more reliable and they have a 5 year warranty. I put a second one in my G5 a few months ago and it's worked perfect.

ok great thanks. so you say seagate huh? it's funny how everyone has their own preference in hard drive brands. In another post two or three people swore against them.

I would personally invest in an external drive. A little more money...but well worth it! Specially when your looking to invest in half a terabite.

Sounds decent to me...I also like their new 750gb drives, but they can get pricey. Considering your recent crash I would look into buying 2 drives, maybe the 750's, or even the 500's for that matter, and do a RAID 1 internally for redundancy...that way if one drive fails you just switch over to the next one.

Yeah I'm thinking the 500GB drives will suit me best for a while. I'm going to buy two of them and possibly set up a RAID 1.

For anyone hwo doesn't know much about RAID or you're just dusty on the subjuct (as I am) here's a link for a good outline on the different RAID configs.
