24pa and 30 mixed...but only when going to the dvd

we have a short films project with some of the films being done with typical commercial grade mini dv cameras--so i am assuming that means theyre being done in 30 --or is it 60--frames per...meanwhile some of the film shorts were done in 24pa....my question is, if all the 30 (60) frame films are done in their own time line, and the 24pa ones are done in their own separate timeline ....when it comes time to move these two separate sequences to the dvd process, will that work?? (the idea is to get all of this onto ONE dvd...)

Onto one DVD as the Same video? Or will it be a different selection? Either way, if the 60I material doesn't have to match the 24P material, then it doesn't really matter you's you should add a pulldown when you convert for DVD.

You shouldn't have any problems. It's all 29.97 in the end anways.
 
How exactly are you looking to organize that final DVD? Do you just want one track that will play all the movies in sequence or will each movie have its own independent selection? Both can be handled, but need to be handled seperately.

If you want the entire thing done as one solid track that just plays all the movies back in sequence then you need to pick a format. Either pick 30fps (29.97) or 24fps (23.98). Then once you decide which format you want, you need to look into how to conform one to the other. I think you're likely easiest taking it all to 29.97 and just adding the pulldown into the 24pa films. It might hurt their film aesthic slightly, but hopefully nothing to significant.

However, if each movie is getting their own selection (track), you can convert each movie independently and keep their native setting. The 29.97 ones can be exported as such and the 24pa ones can be exported into 24p MPEG-2's. DVD Studio Pro can read both formats fine. The only catch is that, if the playback is going to be on any older DVD players by any chance, not all older DVD players will play 24P DVD's. So if that is a potential problem, you may need to still conform them all to 29.97.

If you decide to conform one or the other, make sure to ask around about filters for doing so. Especially going from 29.97 to 24P. I think there you'd want something like the Nattress filters. Good luck.

first off , thanks so much for the quick replies, sorry i couldnt get back at yous , was away from internet civilisation for the weekend...

varicam, so it sounds like its poss. to move the films to dvd in 2 sseparate tracks. one for 60 and one for 24p..(.would love to do a full on menu driven deal but no time with sememster ending...) so the viewer wouild have 2 choices with the dvd , either play the 60 films or the 24p..so i guess that WOULD mean a mini menu with 2 choices?

I thought ALL DVD players were able to play both interlaced and progressive.

Since you raised the question, I tried to look into it and couldn't find a clear solution. I've found some claims that say one way and some claims that say the other. None from a true engineer or professional (at least that I can confirm), so hard to know who is right on that one. It might just be the poor quality of the drives, but I know I've been unable to play 24p authored discs with one of my disposable standalone dvd players.

Actually, if you know DVD Studio Pro well enough, or know someone that does, you could create 2 tracks, one with all the 60i encoded as such and one with the 24p encoded as such and then have them play back to back. Using the First Play and End Jump settings you could just simply stick the DVD into the player and then it would play all your stuff in one smooth play back (well minus perhaps one little "jump" as it switched between tracks). That's what I'd do if you wanted the most straight forward play back. Otherwise yes, you'd want a menu with a couple of options or such.

varicam, great...thats what we will do,,, yeah we have dvdsp on the mac...so now only need to find a willing and/or ablle student to rig up the method yu laid out....thx again!! .......

I have the same problem

we filmed the first half of our show in 24p and then switched to 24pa and we edit on a 30 timeline so half of it is gonna be choppy, even if we run the filter to get rid of the intercrossing lines. i want to try to be able to have it the same quality without some part being choppy
