Arriflex 16S and the Redrock M2?

Hello folkies,

I have a nice little question here. Can the Redrock M2 mini-35 adapter be used on a 16mm film camera, would there be any issues doing this. I have an Arriflex 16S with a zoom and prime lens. I plan on using it with the prime lense, a 18.5mm T2.5. Could there be problems between the two lenses? Anything? Would I need a shrim kit? A while ago I got some nice lenses that I want to use with my Arriflex. Thanks in advance.

Cinema primes on a 16S will achieve nearly as shallow DOF as you can with a 35mm adapter with a lot better resolution, no chromic aberrations, much faster speed, etc.

I see no reason to even consider this. Its like putting crappy retreads on a Ferrari!

lighthousemedia,

I can't afford them and I've got a few nice lenses that I didn't have to pay for(traded goods).

There is a considerable Difference between DOF in 16mm and 35mm. I'm sure it can be done, the Optical system works the same for any camera (ie Rephotographing a projected image on a Groundglass) but remember that you ARE rephotographing an image.

Light House Media-Yes he can use Cinema Lenses with an Arri S, But the DOF will be that of a Varicam. Still A lot of DOF to be honest. Personally, I could have a use for that set up, be fun to experiment with actually. Getting 35mm Optics onto a 16mm Frame. But the Light Loss would be great, and metering would be difficult, The rig would bevery uncomfortable and even less stable.

An Optical Printer uses the same basic Idea.

KHMUSE-Like Putting Crappy retreads on a Ferarri. a 16s is no Ferarri, by any means! At least be open to the Idea, Might create an interesting Look. The Resolution loss won't be very much. And perhaps he has some '18 laying around, doesn't want to shoot at a T22 outside and doesn't have enough ND's to help him out?

anyways like i said, Would be neat to experiment with, but I do agree, the DOF decrease and Light loss is not worth the hassles to do this on a shoot. But as an Experiment, to see what happens.

I have no Idea how you'd mount an M2 on an Arri S, good luck with that one.

Why not sell the Redrock and get a set of Lenses for that thing. They are dirt cheap (Assuming yours has not be upgraded with PL mount)

All the Best

Thanks Allen. My Arriflex has not been upgraded to PL mounts. Arri standard mounts as of right now. I'm trying to soup it up good, get a nice crystal sync camera going on as opposed to just shooting MOS. Of course I need to convert it from 8v to 12v(no one in LA seems to be capable of doing this) and get a nice Tobin crystal motor for it. So a nice set of lenses(fast primes) are priority as well. So, the best bang for my buck would seem to be purchasing a set of lenses, not the M2 with my current set. Oh well, back to the drawing board...again!!!
Any more info on any of the above subjects would be much appreciated from either/all three of you guys. Thanks alot.

You say you have the S or SB? The SB has one bayonet mount that accepts a much wider array of cinema prime and zoom lenses.

Forget the DOF adapter and sink that k into some clean Schneider primes.

Hello Allen,

Obviously my comment was intended to be a bit of humor and I do agree, a 16S ain't no Ferrari, but with great glass, it can certainly make some fine images. As for not having enough ND, he might want to consider some 7245, that would eat up a bit of light!

It's not that I am not open to the idea, it could be interesting, but so far, I have been less than impressed with the performance of any of these adapters.

Now using an adapter as a substitute for ND, that is a cleaver idea!

overlandfilms,

It is an S, Arri standard mounts only. Will schneider lenses work with the S model? And is there anyone in Los Angeles that could convert my 8v cam to 12v?

Oh, one other thing. Will the Tobin Crystal sync motor work with my 8v Arriflex 16S if I use a 12v battery or power source? Do I really need to convert my camera to a 12v? I will not be using the external '400 mag. Thanks a bunch.

I've heard of getting a 2x extender from Arri S mount to Nikon Mount, I've never heard of a 16s getting a Nikon mount put on. This is often mostly done on the Arri IIC Camera's, It would cost you less to buy some lenses for your 16s in Arri S mount than it would to do this, and you'd have FOV issues, trying to stuff 35mm Lenses on a 16mm Frame.

It would probably cost you around 1200 or so if it was possible to do this for an ARRI S camera. Nikon Hard from mounts for the Arri II and Arri III camera's are often found floating on eBay form time to time for around $600.
