Well, I didn't know if this could be a new thread or not, but since, many music videos are short films, I believe this could do an interesting thread.. :)

My favourites:

1- Thriller (duh)

2- William Orbit's Addagio for Strings

3- Chris Isaac's Wicked Game (Directed by David Lynch, if i'm not mistaken)

4- Tonight, Tonight (Smashing Pumpkins)

5- Canned Heat (Jamiroquai)

It would be nice to name the directors of these videos, but unfortunatelly I can't find the info. I'll try check imdb to update them.

I'm also a big Metallica fan, but think their Videos are not quite up to par with their music... But "one" did came to my mind when I tought about the best videos. Where's your head at is also a very nice video. I forgot to mention two of my favourites, and they are both for the same musician: Fatboy Slim. I just don't remember the song's names: One is where everything blows up in super slow motion, the other is where Christopher Walken is just improvising in a Hotel.

Been watching PALM best director series I suspect.
 
I had (& still have) a major grudge with the whole birth of MTV (which unfortunately in turn beget the "MTV Generation".) In fact, now that I think about it, I outright despise MTV and its impact on my beloved cinema (the pacing, the waaaaaay-to-fast-editing, the lack of build-up/suspense, etc.)

That being said, there have been some beautiful moments in the way of TV videos...

Well, I see it in a different perspective. While I agree with you that MTV brought many bad things to television - may that be Music Video "Commercials" (Put the face of the artist in glamurous shots with beautiful women and cars, with no story or content whatsoever), the creation of the Music Video Singer ( A singer who can't sing, limpsinks all the time but looks good) and also "My Sweet Sixteen" and "Jackass",) It also is a great place to showcase and explore new techniques. More often than not the director needs to follow the artist's "idea", but once in a while you do get fantastic videos that introduce new techniques and even interesting storytelling. No, not "Hello", from Lionel Ritchie :)

Some of my favourite "current" directors come from the Music Video and publicity background (Riddley Scott, David Fincher and even Wong Kar Wai, for example), so I have the outmost respect for the format.

Not for nothing, but the Brothers Scott started out in the advertisement (commercial) game, not the video one.

U2/Green Day - here come the saints or whatever it's called - mostly for the wit factor

Audioslave - Original Fire - anyone know who did this?

Pretty much all of the RATM video's, especially the ones MTV doesn't like

Tool videos, good ole fashioned disturbed stop motion
