I need to record a little VO (think the "good morning, mr. phelps" speech in mission impossible) and my only available mic is the oktava. What would be the best way to set it up - on axis, above talent, below? with pop filter, w/o etc?
there is a small chance i can set up a shure sm58 but i dont know if that'll be possible
any tips appreciated

The Oktava will sound a lot better then the shure... yes you'll want something to block pops... whatever you normally use should be fine. For your particular situation I'd search the archives for posts that deal with nice little table-top VO boxes... I'm pretty sure Marlene Toogood did a thread on that. Basically you want the mic above the mouth pointing down at a spot about 2-3" in front of the mouth... the mic diaphragm will be right in front of the speakers eyes or a little higher... in this position the mic will be close enough that you can definitely p-pop it without protection... but it should be far enough away from the mouth to keep it manageable... the idea is to have it close enough to get some proximity boost for the type of voice you're wanting... but have it far enough away to keep the mic out of the airstream... start with what I just said and raise it slightly if you need to. I expect you'll get excellent results.

heh you assume i've done this before :)
I've never used anything to block pops since i never had to record sound in this way before. I've been at recording studios and normally see that screen thing on a gooseneck. I believe those are fairly inexpensive

If you want the voice to sound like it came from a cheap tape recorder, you'd probably have to do some post processing. Start with a highpass filter at ~400Hz, and a low pass filter at ~5kHz.

If you are in desperate needs you make DIY pop filter with a wirehanger and some nylons. I will let you figure out how to put them together. It aint pretty but it is effective.

Cheers
