Panasonic Announces Shoulder-Mount AJ-HPX2000 P2 HD

No mention made yet. No camera comes with AVC-Intra, apparently it's an optional plug-in board that you can get for the HPX2000/2100?

is same imager as Varicam if I heard correctly - if they had a 1920x1080 chipset, would they not debut it on a higher end camera?

Jan C. has hinted at a 3rd camera yet to be announced. Varicam is on a clear out sale at 45K.

Panasonic may be bold and announce a 4:4:4 P2 Varicam, 1920x1080 Chipset, utilising AVC-I.

Barry/Mike is 4:4:4 possible in AVC-I to p2? Imagine that, a 4:4:4 camera to solid state at the price of one Venom flashpack.

Disclaimer: The above is pure speculation and not based on any knowledge of future Panasonic products yet to be announced.

well, coming from a former marketing background it IS fair for them to say it is native HD, and does 1080p/i in the same breath..it just isn't both of those things at the same time.

>:)

If it is 16:9, and does an honest pixel for pixel or better 720p (sounds like it does), then it is fair to say it is native HD, no? Just not native 1080p....and I don't think they claim that, do they?

Rocketeer - in perusing the AVC-Intra specs during a google search a half hour ago to write about this camera, I noted that there is a 10 and even 12 bit full raster 4:4:4 capability in the H.264/AVC-Intra specs (or was it just H.264 specs? Can't recall...)

So is POSSIBLE, not saying they'll do it.

But from a marketing perspective, 4:4:4 with 720p seems an odd choice - I would HOPE Panasonic makes the leap to a native 1080p/i capable chip, but I dunno. I recall something about Sony having a bit of a lock on 1080p chipsets at one point a couple of years ago for some IP reason or another. And if they did, would they not need a new format? Or record to D-5 onboard or something? Because DVCPRO HD, nice as it is, starts feeling a little out of place in a $60K camera to me at this point...or even a $45K camera. Varicam is defined by 720p, DVCPRO HD, variable frame rates, and film rec mode as far as I'm concerned. How far could they stray from that and still be filling it's Daddy's boots?

Mike-

Notice no mention of sensor size for the 2000 but my guess would be the same as the HDX900 and no Variable frame rates. But they do say that AVC-I at 100Mbps is a smidgen(technical term) off D-5 HD

Assumption: The next Varicam will be 1080, variable frame rates, film rec, all at AVC-I 100Mbps D5-HD. If they go 4:4:4 @ 45-60K, the NGC-F23 and Viper+ have just had a very bad day at NAB. And the Red is the salt into that open wound.

Fair bet to say the old Varicam will be the last '720p only' camera that Panasonic makes at 2/3".

Edit: Deleted creative cow link. Same press release as at begining of this post.

I would say that the successor to the HVX, or at least a sub-$10,000 model, could have AVC-Intra at 100 Mbps (or even 4:4:4 200 Mbps, if that's being planned). After all, the HVX supports the full DVCPro HD format of the Varicam -- and even many of the variable frame rates. The major differences between the two are that the HVX lacks the tape drive and two-thirds-inch sensor of the Varicam, as well as an HD interchangeable zoom lens. Those items alone add up to several tens of thousands of dollars. Whether Panasonic intends to support the same AVC-Intra spec in all new nonconsumer HD products is, of course, up to them.

Is AVC-Intra the professional version of AVCHD?

Went on a course yesterday mainly concerned with Varicam, hosted by Panasonic NZ.
Panasonic's Taguchi san, who was the head of the Varicam dev team, gave a day's talk about Vari and other tech coming.

The upshot of your question is yes - AVCHD is a consumer version that has really nothing to do with AVC I, other than the AVC bit at the front.
He made the point a couple of times, that as far as Panny pro products are concerned gop based formats are for delivery only.
"For consumer, we make format available." :-)

AVCHD is 15 frame gop based format.
AVC I - 2 modes.
1 at 50 4.2.0 and the other at 100 4.2.2, as Rocketeer says, supposedly a smidgen off D5.
AVC I add-on board available for the HPX 2100.

Yep, Rocketeer - looks like they'll be a bit sick.
The third cam Jan hinted at, Taguchi san talked about.

You must have been at the AKL course ... ?
I realise your post above was made well in advance.
