Best Tripod Under $100

I would have to see it up close and personal like, but the Head looks like it may be cheaply constructed, possibly contributing to bad pan shots, or premature failure resulting in your new camera hitting the pavement... possibly leading to you $#!++!^@ yourself in public.

Ha, Thanks for the input Cap'n!

hmm, ok . . .well now I'm looking at one of these two

Could anyone tell me what the 525MVB does so much better than the 351MVB2. Is it worth the extra $300 dollars (for films and music video work?). I'm on a pretty tight budget but if the pan-smoothness (is that official tripod lingo?) and such is that much better on the 525MVB than I might just spring for it.

These are mine. Sadly none available for less than 100.. The vinten is around 4K i believe. But it holds 350 lbs.

The one on the dolly is a miller, the one with my dvx is a manfrotto. Great set.

What s that on your DVX100B? It looks like a thermos.

There is also one on B&H Video for $65.00 and it does have a fluid head. I think I might buy this one as it would be my first.

True and I expect to do this eventually but for now I am getting that $65.00 tripod at B&H Video with fluid head for now as I don't own a tripod.

It's the tripod head that contributes to smooth panning. not the tripod leg. I wouldn't shell out that much for the 525MVB. For that price I would get a better head (like the 516) and buy the leg separately.

I'll sell you a rock solid tripod ( although who's counting legs at $100)
It can even be used for a shoulder support if you collapse it (as shown below)
I could do it at a better price if you came and collected it in baghdad.......
lot of news crews out there although for some reason they are using that expensive
stuff you are trying to avoid - weird that!!???
pm me.... :-)

Actually, legs are very important. I had the Bogen 501 with their 2001 aluminum legs- bad combo! The head stuck going into a pan, and the legs would twist. So much for spending all that money on Bogen. I had to pan with one hand, and hold the tripod's column to get something close to smooth.

I was paying attention to this thread in hopes of getting some good "not quite $100 but here's some good $250-300 tripods". Now I'm really thinking that I should just man up and spend the $500 on the bogen 351mvb/503 combo.

Wow that's some setup. What kind of manfrotto did you have your dvx on? Also, what is the vaccuum for the DVX?

come on, did everyone with a sarcastic bone on this forum miss this one? say something, I don't want to be the jerk.

eBay.

Get a used set of sticks.

I found a Bogen 3066 head for $35 and cleaned it up. Voila! a like-new $1100 head!

ok so say I spring for the 516 head . . .what's a good set of legs to go with that . . .say in the $300 range. I understand that the head is what pans . . .so what exactly do good legs do? (besides how much weight the tripod can hold)I'll most likely use the tripod to hold the camera only, so weight is no big deal. Are legs important in interaction with a dolly (which I plan to buy someday)?

I guess im just trying to figure out if the 516 is noticeably better than the 503 for panning. I can't really find anything on google that shows examples of each in use . . .but it sounds like a lot of the finished product depends on the skills of the person operating it (practice makes perfect?)

I picked up a set of Manfrotto 3046 legs and a really cheap head off of ebay for pretty cheap. The head was crap, much like the overpriced 501 P.O.S. I was using, but the legs are amazingly sturdy.
