Best Kino Flo for non-pro general lighting?

I'm not clear on the differences between all of the Kino Flo models... I just want to light my apartment with 5500K fluorescent. And maybe do some videos for YouTube.

Currently I have 3 x 32W fluorescent floor lamps with the Phillips Daylight bulbs. It was impossible to find them and now they're discontinued or I would buy more. It's an apartment so I can't install anything permanent.

I was at the doctor's office and they had 2 x Kino Flo Image 20. It seems like these would be ideal if I mounted them on a stand? Thanks for any opinions!

Kino's are kind of expensive if you're going to use it as a practical. A cheaper route would be to get an over head flourescent light fixture, mount it in, then when you're about to move out, just have it taken out of your deposit or fill in the mounting holes with some spackle and smooth it out with sand paper.

But if you really, really want a Kino, the prices vary depending on if they are dimable like the Diva, how many tubes they can cary, or how long they are. The only stand you need for a Kino is your standard C-Stand with a grip head, but I would get a few sand bags to weight down the c-stand to keep the Kino in place.

I shot a short with Kinos and it was really nice because they didn't emit too much heat and it provided that low contrast look I was going for. I don't think I would buy one for YouTube videos though. I would rather use a cheap paper lantern solution that costs under 15 bucks with the lantern and light socket, 45 if you buy a dimmer, 30 if you make your own dimmer.

Thanks for the reply! Yeah I'm uncomfortable with mounting something... And I'd have to connect it to power somehow right? I guess I could have it leaning against a wall but that wouldn't look very nice.

Each of the 3 one-tube T8 floor lamps were about $150, so it seemed like a 4 tube Kino would only be a little more.

Maybe the Image would be better than the Diva? It looks like it doesn't have barn doors (which I don't need) and it has the long tubes. There's the thread on here saying the compact tubes in the Diva are not that great, at least for tungsten. It would be nice to have it be dimmable though.

Hi,

4' 4-Bank Kino Flo Select with 5600K lamps and combo stand is about $1500, no cases included.

Here's what I would do-

Go to home depot (or lowes, or whatever hardware store) and but a 4' two lamp t8 fixture, I got one for 7 dollars once. If you can, find one with an electronic ballast. Next, go to filmtools.com, or your local grip store and get a nail-on baby plate like this: http://cinemasupplies.stores.yahoo.net/mat3babnailp.html

Next, paint the back of the fixture black, and line the inside with aluminum tape, the kind that's super shiny- this will help increase the light output. Then, get some phillips sunshine flouro lamps, I saw these just a week ago at home depot, so I know they're still around. Bolt that plate onto the back of the fixture, get yourself a c-stand and some sandbags, and you're good to go!
