Lighting Concerts in a Bar ?

Hi,
I've read through the introductory thread on lighting which was quite helpful.

I need to light a small jazz band playing at a busy bar. The house lighting is quite dim...I'm wondering if any of you may have had any experiences lighting concerts or busy areas and could offer any additional advice or things to look out for?

For now, I'm just planning on making a quick DIY kit and trying to find something I can use as a gel/filter... I'll probably go for a chiaro-sciaro (sp?) look, so maybe something using lighting at a lower level pointing up...not sure.

Thanks again for all the great advice here already. - Janos

If you can try to hang some key lights with some 1/4 CTO or CTS from above the main players heads and then add use some bounce cards like foamcore to bounce the light under them to use as fill. As for background i would fill any back walls with 1/4 or 1/2 CTB gells to add depth of field. For DIY kit you can get by with some reflectors with Ph-211 or PH-212 (150w) bulbs and some black wrap to help you shape the light. Unless you already have some other lights. BEWARE OF VOLTAGE OVERLOAD FOR YOUR CONNECTIONS. For every 100w is equal to 1 amp. Hope this helps. Also make sure you ask what voltage is coming out of the stage area since it is a commercial establishment.
