oktava mk012 outdoors... at all?

i have minimal experience with audio i'm afraid, but i was wondering if it's possible to use the oktava mk12 w/hypercardiod as an outdoor mic attached to a boom? i can get my hands on a severe weather cover, but that's about it. is this a reasonable request for a guy who can't afford to buy another mic?

I use my Oktava outside all the time but only with more than a foam on it. Normally the BBG and the windjammer work well enough but I have been known to throw it in a blimp. For exteriors it is not the first mic I reach for but to answer your question, yes.

Would I want to use it just with foam? Nope and that is pretty much what that severe wind thing is

you dont even have to use the rycote , 2 foams one over another ( small one + shure 57 on top) + fur would do quit well in moderate condition

if u dont mind me asking, what is the first mic you reach for when doing your exterior shots? i'm in the process of narrowing down a few that's been recommended to me so far.

Are saying you can put a small foam over a bigger one like this one I have (shure A81ws) and add fur and have no problems?

Not sure how you get a smaller foam over a bigger one. Do you mean the other way around? In any case, I have done this along with a 'mic-muff' which is a line of furries from WindTech ( http://www.olsenaudio.com ) that are designed to go over the standard foams of various mics. There's a PDF file on that site with sizes and such. B&H and others sell them.

As Oleg said, this will only work in moderate conditions at best. You'll still have problems with high and/or gusty winds. So if it's a situation where you have to depend on it working, this is probably not the solution for you. However, for more casual sitiations, it's a lot cheaper than a BBG/Windjammer combo.

another way is just pick up k-tek softie and xlr to xlr barel to increase the lenght of the mic , may bring much better results keeping themic not get hits from the wind
the olsen foam is terrific , but also need somu fur over it .
i can sudjest you to go with small ter drop foam , place it inside the shure beta 57 one and put afure over , would be quit cheap ,( at last here in hollyland it is less then 40bucks uncl the fure that you make your self

Hi Tuinboy,

While Olsen audio has a great assortment, if you're only looking for a rudimentary "severe weather" foam piece, here's the one Oktava recommends.

Regards, Michael

That is the Olsen screen.

I'm a real big fan of Sound Room... so I hate to say anything unsupportive of something that they sell... but I had two of those "severe conditions" screens and even though the BBG is a hard pill to swallow... I compared them side by side and they are each priced appropriately in comparison to one another.

On a scale of 0-10, with the bare mic being a 0... a small thin foam is a 1, thicker foam is a 2, up to the double foams (such as the windtech, olsen, etc) being about a 4... then jump up to the BBG at about a 7... and add the fur for a 9.9. (longer fur may be the 10)

So yes, the Olsen, Windtech, whatever... is for sure twice as good as a normal foam... but you need a significant dead air space for a screen to be really effective (like 1" minimum... normal zeps and BBG give about 2")... then outdoors with a breeze fur is mandatory.

*One of the economy items that the sound room sells is the Sabra Som shockmount... I have several components of this mount system and I think it's really nice for the low price... and this is an area where I'll tell people if they don't want to spend the $ for the K-Tek then the Sabra Som is a good alternative... I just wanted to mention this so nobody thinks I'm being a gear snob when I encourage people to get the BBG. I only care that something works... once that's guaranteed then I may consider personal preferrence due to form. I like the form of the K-SSM so I endorse it, but the Sabra mount works great so I also endorse that. Bottom line: I have nothing against the windtech at it's price... but in regards to the Oktava (which is potentially more sensitive to wind) it's just not enough protection to bank on.

Im a big fan of Soundroom as well. I have the Wintech too. But Mattin is right as always.

I often shoot outside with Oktava, with right conditions. I shot outside in a high hilly area recently, a good amount of wind and used the Oktava (enough for the oktava to handle with the right backup) It was a short scene I didn't have a shotgun (an evil gnome took it... normally the Oktava wouldnt be my first choice for that condition)

But I knew the Oktava would be fine... WITH the right components. BBG + Windjammer (the furry little ushanka). (KSSM too but thats always in use)

The windtech I wouldnt feel that way Ive tried it before when I first got my Oktava, and realized I needed to swallow that big pill to get the best out of the Oktava. (BBG + Windy Jammy, and KSSM). Always feel safe for any condition with Oktava (maybe not ANY condition need to know the limits even with the best components for your Oktava)

you can get away in place without atmosphere - but then why you need a mic :-)
usially outside you need more then the foam

I got mine from Trew, but any of the location sound shops regularly recommended on here (Trew, Coffey, Gotham, Location Sound, etc.) should be able to get it for you. You might want to call around to see who has it in stock.

The Sabra-Som shockmount works well but I hate the threaded form. It takes too much time to switch between one mic and another.

i checked out Trew's website and the prices look reasonable. i was wondering if Rode's dead cat will work/fit the ocktava mk012 or if i should just order the Fat Cat?
