Actors Who Turn You On/Off To a Film

I notice Nicholas Cage is on a lot of peoples bad lists, but I actually like him in certain roles. I thought matchstick men was fun and I really loved Lord of War. Also, what about adaptation? That has to be one of my favorite movies, granted its mostly because of the writing.

My short list:

Good

Kevin Spacey
Anthony Hopkins
Paul Giamatti
Morgan Freeman

Bad

I'm less concerned about the actors than the story, director and how good the trailer is when I go to see a movie. I think to not see a movie because of a specific actor is tempting but limiting. For example I totally hated Vin Diesel but then I watched Find Me Guilty and I have to say I was suprised. Outside of his stereotypical role he shows some real potential. And for the longest time Leonardo Dicaprio really annoyed me but lately he's proven he can really act. So I say, if everything else looks good, give it a shot because actors can always suprise you.

Sad Max said:
Keanu Reeves is one of those people who is great fun in the right role, but lacks the range to work outside what he's innately good at. Which, I guess, is the difference between a movie star and an actor.

Nic Cage is a good actor persay but has the appeal of wood panelling. In fact, Nicolas Cage and Keanu Reeves are kinda like the bazarro of each other. nic can sorta act, no charisma. keanu reeves has charisma but cant act. go figure.

anything with

William Hurt
Ralph Fiennes
Tom Hanks
Christopher Plummer
Morgan Freeman
Paul Giamatti

Nowhere near complete, but I'm inclined to watch movies with Bob Hoskins, Ian Holm, Maggie Smith, Wallace Shawn...

Turn offs include Keanu Reeves and Sean Penn.

I like Cage.

But he should wait a few more years and play the parts that would have gone to Jimmy Stewart if he were available.

actors I like in a movie: Ben Kingsley, Aaron Eckhart, William H. Macy, Edward Norton
actors who will wreck a movie for me: Julia Stiles x 1000

Turn "ons" (as wrong as that sounds")

Will Ferrel
Jack Black
Tom Green
Bruce Campbell
Ted Raimi
Morgan Freeman
Winona Ryder

Turn Offs:
Nicholas Cage
Tom Hanks (mostly, except for every movie he has been in, but i just have to say it lol)
Ben Stiller
Owen Wilson
The Wayne Brothers
Jason Biggs

brian cox....... wurd.

loved him ever since LIE. That movie was intense, but awesome.

Hafta admit that Hopkin's Lecter always suited me better, even if Cox played the role first.

Yeah LIE was something else. A story where a pederast is the most humane, caring character...great slug line, too.

Two up and comers that are quickly becoming my favorites are

Ryan Gosling - was in a bunch of crap then broke out with an amazing performance in "Half Nelson"
Danny Huston - "The Birth", "The Proposition" - and John Hustons son to boot.

I'm in:
Philip Seymore Hoffman
Ed Harris
George Clooney (ok the "oceans" crap sucks but they fund his good stuff)
Kate Winslet (animation doesn't count, right?)
Jeffery Wright
John Goodman
Anthony Hopkins
William H. Macy
Chris Cooper

I'm out:
Tom Cruise
Robin Williams (ok - technically not exactly true, but he pisses me off all the same. His immense talent as an actor is only surpassed by his hideous taste in scripts)
Jim Carrey (minus Eternal Sunshine)
Anything with a computer generated dragon or other mythical flying beast - no exceptions.

Here is the list of people I can think of now. Will only include people who are "stars" or leading role material in Hollywood films.

ON
Clive Owen (favourite modern actor, Children of Men is a great film)
Cate Blanchet (favourite modern actress, can't wait to see her play Bob Dylan)
Edward Norton
Leonardo DiCaprio
Daniel Craig (looking forward to I, Lucifer, read the novel if you get a chance)
Philip Seymour Hoffman
Kate Winslet
Gael Garcia Bernal
Jennifer Connelly
Owen Wilson

OFF
Kevin Costner
Nic Cage
John Travolta
Samuel L. Jackson
Juliane Moore
Julia Roberts
Ben Stiller
