DVCpro HD 720 25p in FCP possible?

Is there any way i can capture/edit footage via firewire recorded with a Varicam at 720/25p? Avid does not seem to do it. FCP can do it now?

It seems i am not going to be able to sleep tonight.
We shoot 5 tapes thinking FCP had solved the 25 compatiblity but it seems still it has not been released any update that can handle 720 25p.

Yes version 5.1.2 should be able to do it. Do you have 5.1.2?

Actually there's a bit of an issue though -- VariCam doesn't shoot in a 50P sequence, it shoots in 60P. So you might have to import the footage as 60P and use the FRC to strip out the duplicate frames. And even then you're left with 25fps encoded using the 60p codec, not the 50p codec... hmmm...

Thanks Barry, exactly as you say it is a pain in the ass.

25p fps that go in a 59,976 streamline. I wonder if FCP can work with that, and remove/pulldown the extra frames.

My producer is looking at me with red eyes...

Edited: Bad news. "FCP does not support DVCPRO HD 720p25 capture from or output to tape."

Hi.

I've captured 720p 25 shot with Varicam to FCP.
What we did was to capture via SDI (Firewire should be good too) to 1080p 25.

The AJ 1200 removes pulldown and uprez beautifully.

Yes, but HDsdi means a proper RAID system + HD SDI input. Not cheap to buy, and more expensive than the no cost of a firewire connection.

Nope, not really...

You're still recording DVCPRO HD and not uncompressed.
A BM HD Pro (4:2:2) was around 800 Euro a year ago.
Compare that to the renting of the Varicam and the value of the tapes... -;)

From the images I worked on, I could not see much additional artifacting from the un-recompress process (I A/B'ed a bit before settling on the HD-SDI). The 1200 is a beautifull machine!

I had read horror stories about people blowing the ridiculously overpriced FW card in the 1200. I just didn't have the guts.

(Firewire seems to be a Panny achiles heel)

So you mean you capture via HD sdi to DVCpro HD 1080 25p? Once you are compressing again, whynot going to the higher res?

If don't have the RAID...

Of course you can do the uncompressed thing, but the gain is doubtfull as the source is DVCPRO HD.

Nono, you understood me wrong.

I was asking you if you captured to DVCpro HD 720 25p via HDsdi, or if you did the same but this time capturing to DVCproHD 1080 25p.

My questions goes more on the direction of: Using the dvcpro HD codec can gives us low data rate but very good quality. Still if i am not wrong, we are decompressing the original footage to uncompressed on the HDsdi and then compressing it again to DVCpro HD, so we are loosing one generation, but still it is an afordable way to edit the tapes.

Is this correct? Thanks

I captured to 1080p 25.

The 1200 deck is a beast! -;) And a good one too.

Recompressing is happening in realtime as you capture. You just set your capture preset to desired format.

Worked very well. Not a hickup. Almost boring -;)
(I guess that is the quintessential definition of pro gear that works: Almost boring)
