CPU at 99% when AE idle??

do you any of guys have this issue on XP with AE 7?
when the app is sitting idle (not rendering), the cpu is still at 99% no matter how long i leave it without doing anything.

happens almost all the time for me regardless of the type of work i'm doing.

AE 7 on XP with AMD dual core + 2.5 gig RAM :zombie_smiley:

LOL! Yes, in all versions it happens, it something that I've been wondering for a long long time why it happens. I've seen it from version 5.
But from my observations I think in 6.5 they have fix it somehow.
Here is my workaround. If you want to leave the PC for a while with AE open, just do a right click in the timeline for example, roll the mouse over a menu item and leave it there don't click it. This brings the CPU usage to normal.

really?? i got to try that. what on earth?:badputer:

edit: tried it and it doesn't work. realized that it'll do it even when I have a new, blank project so there's no way it can be any type of render activity...

I have a Dual core 2.5ghz AMD x2 (Windows XP) and I have never run into this issue. However there may be some pre-caching feature built in that I'm not aware of as a pre-render for the next few frames. Next time I'm in AFX, I'll be on the lookout.

I've never noticed any slowdown untill I'm done rendering a file. Thats because the default ram usage for AFX projects is set to 125% of your original ram. Lowering this to 90% prevents alot of the HD caching after a render. (this could slow you down though.)

i've never had that issue and i'm on a PC....intel xeon processor's though

Check again ,I'm seeing it on 2.8 pentium at home and on a dual xeon machine at work. Versions 5, 5.5, 6.0, 6.5

Haven't checked it on 7.0

totally strange..it comes and goes. after 3 days of it happening, it just suddenly went away...and I don't run anything else on the machine..strictly editing and AE work....well i better go do some work on it before it comes back!

Ive never had that, from version 4 on. Odd. All Windows, from, Intels, AMDs, you name it.

I always run Asus boards with an Nvidia card. As I type this, AE is open in a 29.97 fps composition with a 24P file, guassian blur at 5 on the file. Cpu is 0. When I applied the blur it spiked, hit almose 80 then down to 0 again.

When you are not doing anything directly in AE, windows should have the System Idle Process take back over and free up your cpu. sounds like that's not happenening.

Have you by any chance got Windows Defender on your machine. If you have, DUMP IT! It was forever hogging CPU.
I had the same problem until I did the above.
GEOTAN.
