The "Star Wars" quote to beat them all

"George Lucas did not make a prequel trilogy to his original Star Wars saga...he made 3 of his own fan films."

It seemed to make things very clear. I've stopped shaking my head. I thought that would never happen.

Kind of an insult to fandom, there.

How many SW fan films have you seen? I'm sorry to say that the vast majority are terrible. I think thats what the quote is getting at.

and that, my friend, was exactly Sad Max's point regarding the quality of the prequels.

Yeah, kind of my point; what Lucas perpetrated were basically three worse than terrible fan films, on very large budgets, tying up the valuable time of highly-skilled professionals whose talents could have been better applied, elsewhere. A fanboy might well have done better.

i'm looking forward to that movie Fan Boys... has anyone heard about it? its about some star wars nuts wanting to break into lucasfilm to steal a copy of Episode I cause they cant wait for theaters... in the trailer it shows a man in the shadows that gives them schematics on lucasfilm and how to get into it and the man turns out to be William Shatner LOL. they also knock down a captain picard statue, and go to a Trekkie convention and they "can't believe we're with the enemy" LOL it looks hilarious!

oh yeh i saw the trailer for that. looks hillarious! I will probably see it when they release it just for the heck of it. And yeh the prequals wern't so great. I just loved the originals. Still have the 1st original of the VHS with thier cases. But still can't believe he made episode II a freaking love story! Who would want to see a star wars love film that is an action movie first of all.

Well, it's the difference between a mature, moving, well-framed love story that grows out of the characters, that's integrated with the grand events in the backdrop, and a sniveling pointless adolescent why-the-f*ck love story that's jammed into the larger scheme of things, because, well, for structural reasons it kind of has to be there.

I've actually arrived at my own theory behind the love story between Anakin and Padme - for all their capabilities, they're two essentially helpless, inexperienced young people thrown together by terrible events completely outside their control, and with no one else to turn to, they're basically driven into each others' arms out of fear and isolation. It's the kind of love story that can only really happen against the backdrop of a society that's become too old, too internally rotten and too inflexible to survive, and is disintegrating so fast that people have no one to cling to, but whoever happens to be next to them. In happier, healthier times, without the spectre of total collapse looming over everything, Padme wouldn't give Anakin the time of day.

Or am I giving Lucas too much credit...?

No Lucas surely thought so deeply... what we perceive as crap is really the most important love story of our time which reflects the... *vomits* It's just such a contrived story where the actors seem like they're forced to say those stupid lines, where as Leia and Han just... sparked and progressed. Then again their characters were actually interesting and well acting was actually good... and Han is just too cool to be terrible!

I just hope Lucas doesn't screw up Indy 4 like the prequels... Spielberg still has his touch hopefully it works out. And they don't have some stupid Indy wannabe son or cliche stooge trying to follow in his footsteps who does all the action (imagine Hayden as Indy's son lol too funny I can so see Lucas doing this) Anyways.

The quote is great though and true. I don't blame Liam Neeson for not wanting to make a cameo in Episode III, Lucas just lost his touch.

It is Lucas's involvment that will screw it up and I predict it will suck (Crusade did hard). An oft repeated point I like too make is that RAIDERS was nominated for Bet Picure and Best Director and Best Cinemaphotography

The other ones just pale in comparison with thier comical cutesy crap brought to us by none other than George Lrcas

I think one major reason that 'Temple' and 'Crusade' sucked little rocks (sorry, shawneous) is that Leigh Brackett wasn't around to help write either one. Any time Lucas succeeds at telling an actual story with actual characters (as opposed to some cardboard cut-outs experiencing a more-or-less randomly contrived string of events), it's because he had someone of Brackett's or Campbell's talent to shepherd him through it.

I don't think you are.

I actually think the prequels were a good story, but poorly executed. A story of a man's fall into darkness, motivated by his own demons stemming from actually wanting to do the right thing (fix everything). A classic Greek tragedy.

A different writer could have made it compelling. Could have given the characters real life, and most importantly, real dialogue. And put more emphasis on the compelling parts of the story.

Ep III came closest to it, but still came up short. And . . . there really should have been more Vader the Badass before it ended.

Yes, but...virtually every lousy film ever made, could be described at some level as basically being a good story, poorly told. Heck, if you reduce it enough, that's even true of Plan 9 From Outer Space.

I would actually sort of go along with this, except in the case of "Manos: The Hands of Fate."
