how do you take screen shots on a mac?

Also a PC guy here, but if macs handle overlay video anything like the way pc's do, ctrl-prt scr screen-grabbing won't work if you're trying to grab a frame of playback video (media player, etc).

use Grab

or Cmd-Shift-3 (full screen capture) / Cmd-Shift-4 (select the screen area for capture)
you'll find your ss on desktop

there is another one for selecting the window you want to capture, but I don't remember the shortcut... you'll find it in Grab, though

thanks guys!

the command shift 3/4 thing is exactly what I was looking for, it's awesome! lol, i'm so new to a mac it's not even funny.... haha

They rock. I'm a cross-breed. I love both platforms.

Cand Comand Shift 4 is forever king.

Come on people, using a third party utility or even Grab for something like this?! The abovementioned keystrokes work in every app without needing to load another utility - it's plain ineffecient to load up another program before taking a shot. Like going into a few menu levels to find something that has a button assigned to it on the icon bar at the top.

To choose an app you wanna take a screenshot of, press Cmnd+Shift+4, and then hit the Spacebar - a small camera will appear which will let you choose any window you wanna take a picture of.

i agree with you on that.

what would be the advantage in using any of the tools/widgets for a simple screen shot?

Laziness?:) Actually, I usually prefer keyboard shortcuts, but it's nice to capture and have the widget open the image up in Photoshop automatically. (It will open Photoshop.) By the way, I have the widgets set to a hot key, so it's one click to use.

I could never fathom the concept of a GUI interface being less work that a couple of keystrokes. The laziest programmers use keystrokes. :)

Answer: Perhaps you don't want to take a photo of the whole screen, or you'd like to have cropping/sizing options, or you'd like the make the image black and white, or you'd like to capture video, or you'd like to capture a non-traditional aspect ratio, and you don't feel like / don't have time to open Photoshop.

As for me, those situations occur, I don't know, 15 times a day, between blogging, researching, and editing documentaries. I'm always capturing something, and time is usually short.

well it's cool to hear everyones perspectives on it. i'm a year deep on my mac and often find myself stumped on simple things like this... lol
