Wii

My wife and I just picked up a Wii... It's pretty fun on our 119" projection screen, need the component to at least get 480p though, cause it's a little swimmy.

My two cents: I was majorly skeptical over the controls... flashes back to my childhood horror, saving up every cent for a power glove to be just like Lukas in "The Wizard." Only to find out it was garbge... but I digress.

Turns out the Wii controlls are pretty good. Not gonna beat my keyboard and mouse and World of Warcraft (Ever), but it is a new and fun gaming experience that draws people that normally don't play that many games.

Zelda was cool, but for an immediate rush, I had a blast playing Excite Truck (another clever throw back to the day).

The unit itself is constructed much better than the gamecube. For one, it has slots for gamecube controllers, can take the mini GC disks, and can even take GC memory cards. So it's totally backwards compatible. The unit feels sturdy, and is cut angular, giving at an oldschool OG nintendo feel (which I like). I think white is a nice artistic choice... very "apple" very clean... clearly they are trying to contrast PS3 as much as possible.

Also, it comes with 512 MB of internal memory, which is nice, but it also uses regular SD cards, which are cheap and plentyful, so memory is no longer a task to get and a monopolized rip off. I think it will even show pictures off an SD card, etc. Cool feature.

It's totally WiFi compatable. I had no problem connecting to my WEP encrypted access point, it promptly updated the Wii and I could check out "channels" where I could buy OG nintento, Super Nintendo, N64, and Sega Genesis games. They range from five to 15 bucks dep. on the console, and there aren't too many titles yet, but imagine this will be a big, expanding area.

For certain console games you need to by an additional controller attachment that is 20 bucks and hard to come by right now. but the original nintento games work with the WiiMote turned sideways. So welcome back, Mario Brothers and Donkey Kong.

Anyway, I think it's pretty cool. Does take some getting used to... and definetly a step up from the GameCube, which I thought lacked in originality, design, titles (just a few really good ones).

Looking forward to Call of Duty 3 and Metroid Prime 3 or whatever!

Oh, and yeah, I wish it was HD, but I'm used to playing PS2 and GC on my projector, so I am used to the quality...

again... nothing beats World of Warcraft :)

They immediately sold out in all the stores around here. There are at least 35 stores that carry the Wii within 10 miles of my house and every one of them sold out with campers. I'm to busy to camp out for a Wii but I'm sure they'll be plenty available before Christmas giving. I'm giving to my kids (but also to myself).

I'll definatly be hooking up in 480p mode and am looking for some good Gamecube games to go along with it. I was on the Playstation wagon but the prices are obscene to continue down that road for gaming. I think Wii for a television and PC games.

Darn, Steven.

Try your local Blockbuster. They're for sale at my blockbuster for 249.99. Games as well. I think Just got talked into buying one.

My neighbor 2 doors down works at Nintendo and brought one home last week. Sufficite to say she is the most popular chick on the block this past week. If I were in the market for a gaming system I would definitely go with Nintendo this round. Finally, something different that expands on the button mashing we have been doing for the last 30 years.

I gave the PS3 a test drive at Best Buy the other day, not really impressed. Also the game I played had lots of bugs (whatever that is when you find yourself in an area they haven't written code for, going through walls, etc).

When these guys come out with the NEXT generation, I hope they actually start changing the gaming experience like Nintendo is trying to do. 30 years and most of what we have to show is just better graphics...we should be in Lawnmower Man times by now.

OK, the on-line thing is pretty cool and actually the main reason I won't be getting any console; just too easy to kill a day playing on-line with those things.

cheers

Strange enough I own over 1000 games on consoles dating back 25 years, and id say i spend about 3 hours a week playing them. FF12, KH 2 all started , made to first save point and never played again. Mainly finish the GCN stuff and finished about 3 360 games. Ill definatly be finishing my single player Wii stuff. And Wii parties a plenty with my friends. Im sure bowling will be top of the list.

COMPONENT CABLES (480p): They wont be available in stores until mid December for sale. There will again be Nintendo ones which, Again, are only available online, but thats just for the time being. Nintendo is actually allowing 3rd party cables as well, but not before Mid December when theirs come out in stores.

The cables are sold out online of course. Oh and only 3 stores are allowed to carry the cables odly enough. Circuit City, Best Buy and Gamestop (which has to include EB games since they are the same company, but who knows why they arent listed). They will run 30 bucks instead of 50 like the GCN cables. So anyways, good luck getting them. I ordered mine on Nintendo.com today , and paid the outragous 13 dollar (RED UPS SHIPPING) whatever that means. came to 47 bucks or something after tax. Hope they get here soon cuz the graphics are looking muddy.

Maybe thats nintendos trick for the graphics, you get it and you realize since you dont have the component cables at the moment you kinda bleh the graphics, especially in comparison, and then when you do get them and it looks nicer you are happy with the graphics upgrade.

Yup. Everyone's pissed about the Component cables, but you know what it's worth the wait. Gotta have at least 480p if you have a hi-def set.

I'm definitely going to get a Wii. I should be finished with Kh2 and FF12 by late december. =P

Cynic, please post back about the realized difference in using component cables over the composite ones. How much it improves graphics to your eye.

Will do, i can already imagine how great the difference will be. Like the difference between 480i to 480p watching DVD's on HDTV's. Interlaced signals are just no good on Digital Sets.

yeah the deinterlacing algorythm in my 720p projector leaves ghosting and makes things muddy... far preferable to have the device sending the signal do the deinterlacing, like a progressive scan DVD player... or the Wii with component cables.

Basically, my guess is, things will still look a little blurry, like a slightly blown-up JPEG image, but the temporal motion will look a lot cleaner. Does anyone know if the Wii is 30p or 60p?

Considering that a few games run at 60fps, and look like 60fps games played on PC's/Mac's its safe to say its 60p (though that term isnt really used in gaming) just the frame rate of the game.

I got the wii on the 19th waiting for about 3 hrs in line which isn't bad compared for what people had to do for the ps3... Got call of duty 3 and zelda twilight princess.

It took me 9 days and 50 hours in all to beat the zelda game! Best zelda game i've played yet and I would reccomend it. Call of duty 3.. still playing and great system over all.

I'm definitely getting the Wii. How else can I play Zelda: Twilight Princess? Now, if they come out with a Resident Evil title for the Wii ... well, that's all I need.

I'll wait until they work the bugs out of the PS3 and drop the price a few hundred dollars before I consider buying it. I want both these machines, but I don't need them this instant.

Wow, 'Resident Evil' with those controllers...COOL!

I know! Resident Evil 4 was so great ... I sure hope that Wii has a sequel. I think I read some place that there will be, but I'm not sure.

how do you play call of duty and zelda? do you use the motion sensing part of the controller or do you use it like a regular controller?

you use both the numchuck and remote. Remote to swing sword and other stuff and numchuck to move around. Call of duty 3 same thing but you have a gun of course... point and shoot. Fun stuff.

Surprised that there aren't already Nintendo or third-party controllers in the shapes of swords, guns, etc.

I've heard that such things are in the works. I might have to get one of these. It just seems like it would be a blast.
