LaCie disc dying!

I just had 2 LaCie 320 gig drives crash within a week of each other!! I've had them for about 2 years. Is this normal??

Am i doing something wrong?? Perhaps they were to close to each other. I have 5 and they stand upright all about 2 inches from each other. I've recently been trashing/ejecting them when not in use because i was told this would make them last longer - now i'm thinking this could have lead to an early death.

I have to now re-import footage from 2 projects!! Thankfully my project was saved on my g5 harddrive...

I have NO idea... but LaCie reports are wide spread around here. I've had one go down without warning... and one I believe to be going down right now. I only power it up to get a few things off it a day.

There's a reason DiskSavers offers a 10% discount if you send them a LaCie drive!!!

The only reason I've had TWO of these is that they replaced the first one.

I think most drive 'brands' to an extent are a crapshoot. I've had people swear by Lacie and never have issues. But then I see all the complaints on this board. Myself and some friends have used many Maxtor drives w/o any hiccups. However, again on the forums and from some other collegues, I've heard quite the disdain for Maxtor drives. Seagate and ahh Fujitsu I think drives seem to have a pretty solid reputation though. How much of a guarantee that really is though, well....

Yes they suck, I've been thru 3 of them and realized they aren't very reliably at all. The drive is actually made by maxtor, so stay away from them as well. I was working on a greenscreen gig, two bar mitzvah, MV, etc.. and just as I finished most of my projects, the drive took a dump! :( Yea it's was pretty bad, I had to do most of everything over again, however I used some of the rendered files from FCP and that worked out for some of the GS parts, but my advised to you is to get a G-Raid drive, they're awesome.

I have seven external hard drives, three of which are LaCies that I bought in 1999, 2001, and 2003 respectively. They're the only ones that have not crashed once. By far the most reliable that I've used, and the only drives that I'll spend my money on in the future.

Exactly!!!

The ones they make to last last for ever!!

The others... well -- as many drives as they sell... even a fail rate of .05% is very high.

I had a 500 gig LaCie drive about two years. It first started making some noise (once a while) for a couple of months, and then finally started working - the computer said it doesn't recognize the hard drive anymore. I don't think I'll be buying a Lacie or Mactor again.
