What is the current version of FCP?

I am currently running FCP v5.0.4

I read the other day that version 5.1 has better support for P2 cards so I set about trying to download an update, but I'm not having much luck.

Do I have to pay to upgrade to 5.1?

Current version is FCP 5.1.2. And yes, you have to pay for the upgrade, but right now it is really cheap. If you have FCP Studio, then it is only $49. The only drawback is that you have to send Apple your install disks, and they send you replacements:

It takes 10 days to two weeks and the your order must be postmarked by December 20,2006. It is an excellent deal.

That will get you to FCP 5.1, then you run your software update and it updates it to 5.1.2

Other than better P2 support, what are the benefits of 5.1.2?

Chris--There are a couple of big benefits from my perspective. One is a bug fix that fixed a problem in earlier versions with playback and dissolves of ingested footage. The other is that when you capture 720p 24 direct to disk on a laptop (or other Mac for that matter) using FCP, the new version will automatically strip out the redundant frames, recording only the 24 frames you actually need, rather than all 60 fps streamed over firewire. This makes recording 24p to disk equivalent to recording 24pN to P2 cards, even though the camera sends no info out firewire when in 24pN mode.

I'll probably do the upgrade, I'm just annoyed that they make it so difficult, having to send back discs and all. You'd think in this day and age they would have figured out a way for us to just do it over the Internet.
