Finished Editing: Now I Need to Burn Onto a DVD

Hello, Everybody,

I'm now looking to render for immediate DVD burning (the edits are finished).

I filmed in 24P. I need to render each individual scene, and then I plan to render those scenes together into an individual clip (the film as a whole).

Please tell me what format I should render the individual scenes and then what format I should render the scenes to make them one clip.

I know that the individual scenes will be rendered using Vegas 6.0, but am unsure where to render the clips together into one clip; I'm not sure if that's done in Vegas or DVD Architect?

Much thanks!

Render each scene as DV 24p inserting 2-3-3-2 pulldown. Then, arrange them on a Vegas 24p timeline in the order you want them for your movie. Then, render using the DVD Architect 24p templates.

Hi, David,

Much thanks! I've render the individial scenes 24p with 2-3-3-2 pulldown, so now I'll go into DVD Architect and check out the 24p templates.
One other question: when doing the individual scenes, should the timeline have been set to 24.000 or 23.976?
Thanks for the help :-)

The DVD Architect templates are in Vegas under MPEG-2.

The timeline should be 23.976. Use the default 24p templates for the timeline.

Okay, I'm frowning. I did everything David said (and both renders went fine), but the size is SLIGHTLY too large. The video's 4,663,328 KB and the AC3 audio's 147, 365 KB. So I assume it's very close, since a DVD holds 4.7 GB. Any advice as to how I can fit the film onto a DVD?

The above posts detail the formats I used while rendering. Much thanks!

The only way to do it is to lower the bitrate/quality a little. You do that in the MPEG render options.

Hi, David,

I was able to fit the film onto a DVD by changing the maximum variable bit rate to 6,000,000 (I started at 8,000,000 and went down by 500,000's until the film fit). I only changed the maximum (and not the average bps) and didn't change the video quality (it's still at 31).

Does it sound like this will bring the greatest picture quality?

Much thanks!

David, Wouldn't he be better off leaving the bitrates alone and changing the 24p rendering template to NOT include 2:3 pulldown? The DVD player will insert the pulldown on the fly so why waste disc space including it? This is what I would do. Create a new template from the 24p template and set the frame rate to 23.976 and NOT the 23.976 +2-3 pulldown which is the default.

The "+2:3 pulldown" in the template isn't the same as you would think of it for DV, where actual fields are inserted -- it's only the flags -- the flags are the instructions for the DVD player to insert the pulldown properly on the fly. If you render an MPEG-2 as 23.976 and also as 23.976 + 2:3 pulldown (remember, this is referring ONLY to the options in the render templates), you will find little if any difference in the file size.

What'll happen, though, if you render it as 23.976 without the "+ 2:3 pulldown," is that DVD Architect will be forced to add those pulldown flags when it authors the DVD. You will not gain any space advantage and the DVD authoring will take longer, because if you had rendered with "+ 2:3 pulldown," DVD Architect would not have to re-render the video.

You NEED the flags in order for the DVD player to insert the pulldown on the fly. A DVD player only follows the flags on the DVD; it doesn't inherently know how to do it.

Ahhh... I didn't realize those are just flag options and didn't affect the actual output. (never mind) ;-)
